Mission:
To realize the full environmental, economic, aesthetic, social, and educational value of the Cambridge urban forest.
Values:
Environmental Control erosion, control pollution, conserve water, conserve wildlife habitat, reduce heat island and global warming effects.
Economic -- Increase property values, save energy for cooling and heating, save watershed disposal costs through surface water recharge.
Aesthetic -- Unify diverse architectural styles, periods and conditions and create a rhythm of design that provides a visual framework for the streets.
Social -- Create a sense of place, identity and well being, thereby reducing crime rates and medical costs.
Educational -- Promote public awareness and support. Involve business and educational institutions.
Goals and Objectives:
Create a comprehensive tree care management plan, including a pruning, removal, planting, fertilizing, and watering cycle.
Continue to update "Tree Manager" inventory, the centerpiece of our management program.
Work with Public Planting Committee to select the hardiest trees for the tough conditions in which they must grow. With the committee's aid, develop a reforestation master plan.
Develop a community outreach program including, among other activities, presentations to educational institutions of all levels and to organizations such as Kiwanis, Jaycees, League of Women Voters, and so forth.
Assist neighborhood committees in organizing tree walks to appreciate and assess public and private trees.
Create a City-sponsored recognition program for privately held "Heritage" or prize trees.
