1. ALERT: Eight acres of Fresh Pond Reservation are proposed by the City Manager to be given to Neville Manor as a nursing home and extended care facility.  But this places a risk not only to the trees and open space o.f Fresh Pond, but poses a serious risk to public health and safety by jeopardizing our
Water supply. He is asking the City Councillors to vote on this TONIGHT! Please come to city hall in Central square and let your voice be heard.  We have been working on a petition today to be distributed tonight.  You can ask Debby Kerschner for a copy at City Hall tonight.

All of us care about the long term care of elderly people: witness the completion of Youville extended care facility this month, of the Mount Auburn Hospital extended care plans and planning by the Cambridge Hospital.  But why take precious greenspace, the unique un-developed space of our Fresh Pond Reservation?  Sasaki Associates have analyzed several sites for building the Library, and many of these may be appropriate for Neville Manor.

This Bulletin usually just reports events, but this time we urge you to show up TONIGHT or call your councillors. Today we have been working with Committee on Public Planting, Fresh Pond Advisory Committee, Cambridge Greenspace Alliance and Committee to Stop the Knafel Center

2. Tree Walk at Magazine Beach was led by Ranger Russ Geer.  We had a great discussion about getting support for greenspace and trees. We discussed the difference between support for trees on 30 square miles of MDC as opposed to 6 square miles of Cambridge. Robb Johnson brought the Master Plan for Magazine Beach.
3. Artists, Sculptors and Wood Workers may select wood the first Wednesday of the month from Mount Auburn Cemetery, this Wednesday July 1, 9:30-10:30 a.m.  For directions, email back to the Cambridge Tree Project.
4. Do you have resources for college students to look at on trees and the environment?  Summerbridge teachers are looking for resources- they don’t need to borrow them, just browse through them to get ideas for curriculum.  They will be teaching younger folks to teach the rest of us about trees.  We look forward to their leadership.
5. Caring for Community Trees: an urban forestry workshop for community volunteers. Sat. June 13, 8:30- 11:30: Street Tree selection, Partnerships, Hazard Tree Identification, Forest Management/Conservation and brown bag lunch. 12:45-3:00 p.m.

6. Would you like to speak about the importance of trees and how they work in the environment with Karen Carmean to Summerbridge students (6th -9th graders from all over Cambridge) on Wednesday, July 1 from about 10- 11:30 a.m. High School students, college students will be preparing a curriculum to teach the 8th and 9th graders.  If you have materials and resources for them to look at, please call or email Alyson Miller at summerbridge@cps.ci.cambridge.ma.us or 349-6647. We are also looking for someone to pick up mulch from 147 Hampshire St and deliver it.

7. Open space concerns and ideas, especially for back yard development, are being collected. If you have additional thoughts, please send your ideas to Stuart Dash, Community Development Dept, 57 Inman St. Cambridge MA 02139. 617-349-4640, fax: 349-4669, or email: sdash@ci.cambridge.ma.us
