1. Rep. Alvin Thompson: “Just a note to let you know that I contacted
Rep. Marzilli's office and signed-on as a co-sponsor for the Urban Forestry

2. Cambridge Tree Project, Concilio Hispano, Cambridge Community Development,
Friends of Magazine Beach, Cambridgeport Neighborhood Initiative, Brookline
Street Neighborhood Initiative, Hastings Square Committee, Ward 5 Committee,
Central Square Business Assoc., Cambridge Community Center, Morse, King,
Cambridgeport & Graham & Park schools, Cambridge Conservation Commission,
and Department of Urban Forestry invite you to a
Tree Walk of
Central Square/ Cambridgeport
Sat. May 9
Demo at 9 a.m.; Walk 10-12 a.m.
Meet at Green & River St in center of Central Square
with Larry Acosta, Cambridge City Arborist, our Urban Forester. If
you cannot make a walk in your neighborhood, you are welcome to join other
walks. Walks will include neighborhood tree care demonstration at 9 a.m.
and a tree identification and common problem analysis walk 10-12 a.m.
Our goals are to teach you to 1.) provide basic care for trees and identify “green teams” around the city who will help care for trees; and, 2.) identify some common trees and tree problems so you can help us be the eyes and ears for our city’s trees. For information, to register for a walk, or to join a green team to care for our street trees or a tree inventory team or to help develop policies and plans to protect and maintain our trees in Cambridge, call 547-1413 or fax 876-8991 or email. Please don’t forget to give us your name, address, telephone number, email if you have it, and interests. Thanks.
3. Greenspace/ Open Space meeting was held at Senior Center last Tuesday. The research which Brookline did on open space in area cities was presented ;by Mike Eisenberg.(sp?). Debbie Kershchner(sp?) of Garden Futures (522-1996) chaired the meeting. We decided to hold another meeting at 57 Inman St where the Conservation Commission meets on Tuesday May 19 from 7 – 8:30 p.m. This alliance led to many people with common interests willing to help each other.
4. ARTISTS, Sculptors, Woodworkers: Come select wood for your works
of art
Wed. May 6 from 9:30-10:30 a.m.
After the blizzard last year, Mount Auburn Cemetery, in conjunction with the Cambridge Tree Project cooperated to set up a program to transform the sorrow into works of beauty. Mount Auburn invites you to choose from the branches and wood in exchange for a small donation to Cambridge Tree Project. This wood is not appropriate for milling or most furniture making.
We will be having selection sessions on the first Wednesdays of the month from 9:30-10:30 a.m. In return we will have an exhibit of the works of art sometime next fall or winter and we just ask that 20% of what you sell the item you make for, goes to pay for the replanting of trees. Karen Klein will be supervising the selection process as part of the Cambridge Tree Project.
5. WHICH books and materials do you think Cambridge Tree Project should purchase as part of its educational program and tree management ordinance planning process? We are looking at selections recommended by the National Arbor Day Foundation and also those recommended by UMASS and Mass. Community Foresty Council.
6. We are writing an article on mulching based on Larry’s words at the Agassiz tree walk and research from the Internet. We are also looking at replacement tree policy. Suggestions?
7. Councillor Born proposed several City Council orders on Monday of
interest to Cambridge Tree Project:
#43. “Establish a new Open Space Acquisition Fund.”
#46. “Protect the copper beech tree at 2210 Massachusetts Avenue during
the reconstruction of North Massachusetts Avenue.”
#47. “Send information about the Memorial Tree Program to area funeral
homes and churches.”
Councillor Davis proposed: #37. “Congratulations to the Cambridge Housing
Authority for the wonderful gardens they have provided the City of Cambridge.”
Mayor Duehay and our arborist Larry Acosta planned to help plant a tree
in Mount Auburn Cemetery. And large beautiful tulip trees are being planted
by Cambridge Urban Forestry this week.
