In June of 1999, residents of Area 4 voted not to refund this program
with their funds.
Many residents explained that they felt the city should pay for the
trees in full. If you are
a resident of Area 4, you may pay for half the cost of planting the
tree, just like residents
of other areas, and the city will pay for half. You may use this same
application to apply for
a tree.
Would you like a Free Tree? What's going on? · If you live or work in Area 4, you can now order a tree for the sidewalk in front of your home or business at no cost. All you need to do is fill out and return an application for the Client Tree program, as soon as possible. An application may be attached to this flyer, or you can pick up one from the Dept. of Public Works at 147 Hampshire St. A limited number of trees are available this year. The City Arborist must approve the location and planting selections on your application. The trees will be planted throughout Area 4. (If there are too many applications we'll limit each person to one tree, but we'll also go to the City to ask for funds to plant more trees!) You must get the signature of the property owner (Cambridge Tree Project can help with this) and agree to water the tree for the first few years. These trees are made possible by a grant from Area 4 Coalition UDAG funds. Anyone is eligible to get a tree: students, tenants, homeowners, and business people. Why trees? Trees are great for the neighborhood - if you want to know why, read inside this notice. Where's Area 4? It's the area between Hampshire St., Prospect St., Mass. Ave. and the train tracks near MIT. Why don't I have to pay? Area 4 Coalition donated some its UDAG funds to pay half of the cost of new trees. The City will pay the other half of the cost. The City will hire a contractor to plant the trees. If you are outside of Area 4, you pay only $140. How do I fill out the application? Please read the enclosed application. · Just pick from the five trees available this year. · Draw a picture of the location · Get the signature of the landowner of the location. · Make sure you're ready to water the tree for the first few years so it stays healthy · Send or drop off the completed application to: The Committee on Public Planting, 147 Hampshire St. If your tree location is in Area 4, do NOT send money now. Where can I get help filling out the application? Call Cambridge Tree Project at 547-1413. Portuguese, Espanol and Creole copies posted at the Area 4 Youth Center, and the Margaret Fuller House and the Fletcher and Maynard schools. Want to plant more trees?
