Program Description

Since 1981 the Committee on Public Planting (CCP) has sponsored the Client Street
Tree Purchase Program, providing street trees for the Cambridge community to add
beauty and health to our neighborhoods.  In this program the City of Cambridge
underwrites the cost of planting the street tree, which the client purchases for spring
planting.  The CCP acts as liaison between the Department of Public Works (DPW)
and the tree purchaser.  The City Arborist is available to consult on any tree
questions.  He will inspect the location selected by the client for suitability.

'Schedule

Applications are accepted throughout the year for plantings in the spring and fall.
The client orders the tree(s) by sending a nonrefundable deposit of $50 to the CPP
along with a diagram of the planting site (s).  The City Arborist reviews the client's
planting site selection and marks the appropriate site.  Underground utilities, narrow
sidewalks, old tree stumps, overhead wires or other conflicts may necessitate the
choice of an alternative site or species of tree. if the city Arborist finds an alternative
site or tree must be chosen, he will contact the client.  The City Arborist oversees the
planting, which is carried out by a private to-

Payment is due in full when trees have been planted and final inspection and approval
by the City Arborist has been completed.  You will be contacted.

Special Conditions

If you decide to plant a tree (s) at a site other than in front of your house or building,
you will need written permission of the property owner.

The City Arborist will do his best to ensure that you receive the species you select.
However, if the stock available at the nursery is not up to standard or is not available,
a quality specimen with characteristics similar to your choice may be, substituted.

Tree Health Care

YOU2 the client, are responsible for the watering and care of your tree(s).  Water is
critical to the survival of a newly planted tree. Slow deep watering once or twice a
week depending on the weather. Do not over water.  Fertilizing in the spring of the
second year and yearly thereafter will encourage rapid growth.  Keep the planting pit
free of weeds and refrain from planting-Z flowers, shrubs, or vines in the pit as these
will compete with the new tree for nutrients and moisture.  A spring time application of gypsum to counter the negative affects of road salts is highly recommended.

Payment
A check or money order for the amount of $50 per tree (nonrefundable) made payable
to the City of Cambridge must accompany your order.

The balance is due after the tree(s) have been planted and final inspection and
approval of the City Arborist is complete.  You will be contacted.
