200 Up
NEW
VERSION 5.00 — October 2002
Can now use decimals, recurring decimals and percent, and can generate solutions up to 9999! New features are shown in pink.
200 Up
solves arithmetic puzzles such as the four fours and similar puzzles. The aim of these puzzles is to generate numbers using certain digits and certain mathematical operations.
Download Now!
You can download 200 Up (60K) now.
200 Up requires the MSVBVM50 dynamic link library. If this is not already on your system, download MSVBVM50.DLL (700K) now.
Basic Operation
The 200 Up window is shown to the right. To use the program, enter the digits and check the mathematical operations and other options you want to use. Then click on the Compute! button and watch it go.
When it has finished, the results are displayed as shown to the right. In this case there are 115 solutions in the range 0-200. The first number for which a result could not be generated is 29.
Controlling the Program
The available mathematical operations are as follows:
- Binary operations
: multiplication, division, powers and roots (addition and subtraction are always available).
- Unary operations
: decimal and recurring decimal, and negative, square root, factorial and percent.
To search for solutions using only 2 or 3 digits, enter a dash (minus) as the 3rd or 4th digit. For an example, see three fours.
The options control the search as follows:
- Keep digits in order
limits the solutions to those in which the digits occur in the order listed.
- Multi-digit numbers
allows the digits to be used to create numbers consisting of more than one digit.
- All results
lists all the results the program finds. Normally, only one result (the ‘simplest’) is shown for each number.
- Low frequency
works like All results but lists results only for those numbers for which the program finds fewer results than the number specified (initially set at 3). This can be used to find numbers with unique or ‘rare’ solutions.
- Complexity is length
changes the definition of which is the ‘simplest’ result by considering the length (number of operations) as more important than which operations are used.
- Text output
produces output in simple text rather than using the Windows Symbol font.
- The Range button can be used to set the range for which results are required. The range must be a subset of 0-9999.
- The Denom button can be used to set the denominator that 200 Up uses for calculations. Internally, all numbers are represented as fractions with a common denominator. This button enables you to change the denominator chosen by the program.

The buttons at the bottom have the following effect:
- Sort by complex
re-displays the results with the 'simplest' first and the most 'complex' at the end as shown to the right. A measure of the complexity is displayed to the left of each solution.
- Copy all
, Copy sel and Copy res copy some or all of the results to the clipboard. They can then be pasted into a document.
