Scout/Guide saluteGreetings from:

as well as the corresponding Beaver, Cub and Rainbow units. We are based at Christchurch, which is a joint Methodist and United Reformed Church in Hitchin, Herts, UK. Where's that, you ask? TL183294. See also Why Christchurch isn't in New Zealand.

Press the button for visitor information since 19 December 2000 (sorry, page counter since December 1996 has been discontinued).

Jamboree on the Internet and Jamboree on the Air (JOTI/JOTA)

We have been taking part in JOTI for several years, and some of us have visited a JOTA station at Tolmers camp site. However, this year Hitchin Scouts and Guides are planning a District JOTA/JOTI station, so we hope to talk to you soon. You'll probably find us as Hitchin1 and Hitchin2, because we are imaginative like that.

Earlier this year, some members of the Christchurch units took part in Thinking Day on the Net, and our Brownies have put up a quiz for you. Also, have a look at our Jamboree on the Internet 1998 page with video greetings message.

Scout and Guide camp fireUnlike some Guide and Scout Units which are supported by the same Church, we haven't actually formed a joint Group. However, we do co-operate on a number of activities - for example, we have annual joint camp fires (see photograph), the Cubs and Brownies have been cycling at Rutland Water and of course the Guides and Scouts set these pages up and took part in Jamboree on the Net and JOTA:CIS - read our reports.

Anyway, we have to co-operate - the one of the Guide Guiders is married to the Cub Scout Leader, the other Guide Guider to the Scout Assistant District Commissioner (Leader Training), the Brownie Guider to the Assistant Scout Leader, and one Assistant Cub Scout Leader to the Guide District Treasurer. One of the Guides is a Helper at Cubs, and then of course there are the Leaders with children in the other Association's Units, not to mention all the brothers and sisters. At times, the list of inter-marriages has been longer, but if you can beat this, let us know.

OK, so you aren't in the UK and you haven't got an Ordnance Survey map, so you can't use the national grid reference system. Instead, you could look at the maps and other local information on our page of other sites of interest.

Why Christchurch isn't in New Zealand

Sorry folks, but this seems to be causing some confusion. Our Christchurch isn't in New Zealand; it's the church at which we are based in England. The city in New Zealand probably got its name from Christchurch, Dorset, in England, and that definitely got its name its from its Priory church. By the time our Christchurch was built, though, Hitchin already had a name!
