Hitchin's UK Brownie quiz answers
How did you do? If you weren't sure about the answers, here is some more
information.
- Brownies join from Rainbows at 7, and may move on to Guides at any
time between their 10th and 11th birthdays.
- Brownie Sixes are named after Elves, Pixies, Leprechauns, Sprites and
other "little folk". Guides typically call their Patrols after
birds or flowers, Cub Scouts name Sixes after colours, and Scouts take
Patrol names from birds of prey (such as Eagles and Kestrels), and
fiercer animals (such as Wolves and Tigers).
- We have a choice of yellow polo shirts, T-shirts or sweatshirts, with
brown culottes, jogging bottoms or shorts. In addition, we may wear
brown sashes, onto which we sew our badges, yellow neckerchieves and
yellow "baseball" caps. Both our uniform and the Guides' were
designed for us by Jeff Banks of BBC Television's Clothes Show.
There are lots of pictures on the UK Guide Association's
Brownie
members pages.
- The name Rosebuds was used for a couple of years from the
introduction of the section in 1914, but was then replaced by Brownies.
Rainbow Guides are the youngest section of the Movement, for girls aged
5-7 years.
- SuperBrownie gained her amazing powers in a freak incident in the
mid-1980s. (This of course means that she has been in the Pack for over
a decade, and it looks as though she will be a Future Guide for a good
few more years yet!). She has saved the day when Big Ben when wouldn't
chime, when there was a runaway train, and in countless other crises.
Usually, SuperBrownie's friends in the Pack, and Brown Owl, help too,
which just goes to show that you don't need special powers to Lend
a Hand. You can find out more about the Brownie magazine on the UK
Guide Association's
Brownie
members pages.
- We take first the Footpath, then the Road and finally the Highway
badges during our time in Brownies. For each, we need to complete one
test from each of the Eight Points of the Guide programme: Keep Healthy,
Be Friendly, Do My Best, Help at Home, Be Wide Awake, Have Fun Out of
Doors, Make Things and Lend a Hand.
- All Brownies should know what LAH means. Be Prepared
is the motto of the Guides (and Scouts). Ever Ready make batteries. We
made the others up - but of course we always obey them too ;-)
- Freda the pink elephant made her entrance in the 1987 handbook. She
reminds us about our Brownie Promise and encourages us to Do Our Best in
all our Brownie activities.
- Interest badges give us the chance to demonstrate our abilities in
our hobbies and activities. They include, for example, Artist, Computer,
Cyclist, Downhill Skier, Musician and Swimmer. Some Brownies manage to
collect ten to twenty, and one British Brownie was in the national press
in 1998 because she got all the interest badges. They
certainly wouldn't fit on her sash!
- Did you spot badge b, which is the correct answer, at the top of the
quiz page? All the sections now use this badge, but in different
colours: green for Rainbows, yellow for Brownies, blue for Guides,
aquamarine for Rangers, white for Young Leaders, navy for Leaders and
red for the Trefoil Guild (a supporters' association of former members).
The other alternatives are all Brownie Promise badges from the past;
Badge a is from 1916, badge b from 1994, badge c from 1914, badge d from
1967 and badge e from 1920.
