Shirley Windmill is in Postmill Close, off the Upper Shirley Road, Shirley, Croydon, Surrey, UK. Come and see Croydon's only windmill. Built in the mid 1850's to replace an earlier post mill which was destroyed by fire in 1854, it worked untill 1892 when it was abandoned. Bought by Croydon Council in 1951 and first opened to the public in May 1995, it's future is now assured thanks to Croydon Council and the Friends of Shirley Windmill.
The mill is opened on the first Sunday of each month from June until October, between 1pm and 5pm. Entry is free but a donation towards upkeep and further restoration is always welcomed.
Car parking at the windmill is strictly for disabled people only. Parking is available in Coloma School opposite the windmill, or in Oaks Road a short distance away. Please remember the windmill is in a residential estate.
Membership of the Friends is only £2.00 per year for a single or family membership and is renewable in April of each year. If you would like to become a friend of the windmill then please contact the Secretary: Clive Higgins, 39 Postmill Close, Shirley, Croydon, Surrey. CR0 5DY or e-mail at 100023.554@compuserve.com
