Too Busy to NoticeWhen taking pictures of people, I've always tried to catch the subject as they are .. rather than as they'd self-consciously like to portray themselves. In the days when I had just the one fixed lens camera that I'd been given, this wasn't always easy unfortunately .. I couldn't rely on a long focus lens to give me distance .. so I had to look for opportunities when the subject was close in body, but far away in thought. I took my camera with me everywhere. Soon people stopped noticing that I had it .. and I learned not to draw attention when raising the viewfinder to my eye. |

Old Trafford, Manchester | CarolineCaroline was a friend I could talk to for hours - and regularly did !. On this particular evening we were joined by a friend of hers, who brought along his guitar, and we had one of those impromptu musical evenings which used to sum up, for me, the delight of being a student. One nice advantage of being able to digitally rework this photo for the web is that I've at long last been able to edit out the flash flare from Caroline's flute, which had always dominated the centre of the frame. In spite of that, however, I've always rather liked the composition.

What is it about Student Bedrooms ?It's odd, but now that I come to think of it, the milestones of maturing as an adult seem to be marked out by the places where you choose to have your friends sit for a chat.. From the Che Guevara bedroom of youth we progress to the Habitat kitchen of young adulthood. From the pine kitchen we move up .. to the tasteful rosewood lounge of middle-aged responsibility. Then, from the lounge .. well, it seems to be back to the kitchen for me ! It's a shame, however, that in later life it never seems quite right to greet friends in that room whose function seems to be reserved, now, merely for sex, sleep and ironing. Maybe I need a Che Guevara poster ? |
