Hello, and welcome to my place, just off the highway .. Have a look around .. Let me entertain you with my poems and writing and .. welcoming 1998 .. some of my photography too as I celebrate my second anniversary of web publishing ...

Two years ago, when I first began this site in December 1995, personal home pages were still something of a rarity. These days, everyone has one it seems !

Back then, of course, the sheer novelty of having a site often took precedence over content and design. The tools for constructing web pages didn't help in those days, mind you .. and the limits to modem speeds and what many people's browsers could display placed lots of limits on how you could arrange the pages as well.

I always wanted my own site to be something a bit different though.

I wanted people to be entertained. I wanted a visit to my site to be something you'd not only want to repeat, but would want to tell your friends about too.

Have I succeeded ?

Well, it seems to a degree ... Over the last twelve months alone, just over 9,000 people have visited this site, or returned for a second look. Many of you have written lovely messages to say that you enjoyed it too.

OK that's modest, perhaps, by Internet standards .. but I'm happy if you are.

Your quick guide to
some of what's here

A lot has changed, of course ...

When I began this site, I was self employed. Most of my original pages reflected that too, in one way or another. In the last year my life has turned upside down though .. and now I'm very happily back as an employee of someone else.

So the time has come for my site to change to reflect this. Out go the pages describing my old business .. and in their place I'm planning to add a lot more pages reflecting my creative and political interests.

The most popular part of the site is still here, of course .. and in fact I'm hoping that in 1998 I'll be able to expand Poem of the Month to include some new material, including the illustrations that will eventually go in to the published collection, Fishing for Birds.

If poetry isn't your thing, then I hope you'll enjoy my writing instead. This is an aspect of the site which still really needs to be developed. As a taster, though, I hope you'll enjoy IRQ'ed, but not bitter .. a light hearted account which shows that nobody is immune from trouble when it comes to upgrading a PC!

The first three parts of my online photo gallery are now open as well. Very soon now, I'll be uploading more of my favourite photos from over the years too, with some more music to accompany them if I can get the composers' permission.

Later in the year I'm also hoping to fulfil one of my few New Year's Resolutions, with a return to active involvement in local politics .. an interest that suffered badly in all the upheaval of changing jobs. When that happens watch this space for articles expressing my own brand of centre-ground politics.

So there's lots to look forward to .. but equally lots to entertain you right now as well, I hope.
