A Right Royal Day Out at the Battlefield
Canal Narrowboat & Railway Train Trips

Step back in time and take an excursion into the rich historical past of the Battlefield on the transport of yesteryear.

The Battlefield Line Railway and The Ashby Trip have teamed up to present a joint train and narrowboat day out centred around the historic medieval Battlefield of Market Bosworth.

The day starts on the Ashby Trips' new 72ft long narrowboat, "Bosworth Lady", at Sutton Cheney Wharf and travels along the Ashby Canal on a leisurely cruise through the rural South West Leicestershire countryside. The visitor can keep an eye out for the varied waterborne and bankside wildlife as they drift along enjoying the flora and fauna, with a ducks' eye view of the Ashby Canal.

Arriving at the pretty village of Shackerstone the train station is just a short amble up the tree lined drive planted by Lord Howe in 1877. At the headquarters of the Battlefield Line Railway you can look round the 1873 Grade II listed station building, which houses a unique railwayana museum, café and gift shop. Why not discover why King Edward VII could not get off the Royal Train here?

Once you have visited the Station board a train for Shenton Station, which stands at the heart of the Battlefield. On arrival take the short walk to the top of Ambion Hill to the Visitor Centre and envelop yourself in the tale of the final battle of the War of the Roses and the birth of the Tudor dynasty. Finish your day with a gentle stroll back along the canal to the Café Wharfside at Sutton Cheney.

Alternatively the journey is possible in reverse. Start your day at Shenton Station for the Battlefield, and make your way to Shackerstone via the train. You may then return on the "Bosworth Lady" narrowboat.
