HUGGLESCOTE STATION
& CHARNWOOD FOREST JUNCTION

Hugglescote Station in the 1950's

A Memory of Hugglescote from Pam Warwick

Have just seen the picture of Hugglescote station in the 50's. Wonderful! I lived there from being 5 weeks old - December 1948 until my family moved to Ilkeston Junction and Cossall station on the Notts/Derbys border, when I left primary school in 1961. My father, Mr A.W. Spriggs was the Station master and our family lived in the station house which was up a hill, beyond the goods shed shown in one of the photos.

My sister and I were upset when we went to look at the area recently as it is impossible to make out anything of what it was like at the time. We did not know of any photos of the station buildings. My memory of the trains (steam engines, obviously) was of a small number passing through at a very slow speed. (We regarded ourselves as The Railway Children!) When we moved to our next station, where the house was on the platform and the line was very busy and the trains very much faster we were in for a shock!
