 Reviews

I've enjoyed many reviews on COF since 1997...and now I feel it's my turn to contribute especially since no one else has sent anything :-) I flew out from Phoenix Saturday stressing about whether I would find good seats (unneeded stress). Landed in the afternoon and after telling immigration I was here for the Cure show they put me in the special 2 hour lane (more stress). Got to a nice hotel 5 minutes cab ride away threw everything in the room and made it to venue at 4pm where I met Maribel the ticket broker who told me she had floor seats (but of course I didn't trust her and bought at the ticket office). The first show was good, with Torture as a nice surprise but it seemed just as good as any other of the 15 shows I have been to (except the Halloween show in NYC and Phoenix Curiosa) so let's move on to the 2nd show! I arrive at noon to buy a ticket this time less stressful since the next 2 shows aren't "sold out" and I run into Maribel! 2 floor seats, 10 rows back right in the middle at a discount!!! No way I say and start moving on when I turn back I notice my wife (who gets dragged to a lot of these shows not that she has a choice)...anyway my wife negotiates a better deal and the stress comes back again! Until 6pm when we walk in and I am proven wrong that they are not fake and it wasn't too good to be true. So on to the show:

Plainsong- lots of chimes, crowd is going nuts RS says "hello again" and the feeling of you get when you start any cure show is there. Not describable but I'm sure many of you know it.

Prayers for rain- very tight and about a 10-15 second rain as everyone in the crowd shows their appreciation. I never thought I would say this but I now understand the "who need Roger when you have Porl" bit. RS lets out a "muchas gracias".

A night like this-  I've never really liked this song for some reason. Tonight it made me cry...something to do with trust I guess and the way RS sang it with so much passion and possibly the release of opening the show with the prior 2 songs.

The end of the world- Time to lighten up! It seemed a little different in that it there was more of a heavy rock feeling. The whole coliseum sang along the ooooo ooo ooooo and RS could not resist from smiling at everyone. It got loud until-

Lovesong - The loudest I have ever heard ANY crowd at any concert ever! And then it felt like every single person in the building sang along
with RS. The more we sang the more he seemed to feed of that energy.

To wish impossible things - WOW! At first I thought we would go back to the normal set list but then this-sang beautifully! Better than I ever
remember...too bad she missed it!

Shake dog shake- Very very powerful! At the end lots of Shhh shhhh shhhhh from everyone in the crowd.

Figurehead- I was shocked at the amount of people that knew this. Usually in the US shows there will be a couple dozen people that know it while this time it seemed like 12,000 were singing along-and a huge roar when RS lost himself in the "Mexican girls"

FTEOTDGS- RS played his guitar to the crowd for the opening and then what seemed about 30k hands in the sky. RS seemed to enjoy himself
watching Porl and Simon get crazy while it seemed they didn't even notice.

Strange Day - Always nice to hear. Again EVERYONE sang along to this.

A boy I never knew - A very simple song. Simon and Porl hardly played, just watched RS in a very sincere and emotional voice  sing. His voice sounded unbelievable good and extremely emotional. The crowd just seemed in awe. I could write a lot more but one last thought on this: usually I
hear a new Cure song and usually don't like it but this I loved. Reminded me of the first time I saw/heard A Letter to Elise during Unplugged. RS says "That one was new by the way".

Pictures - Everyone goes nuts again. Someone throws a Mariachi hat on stage and lands right behind RS. Again everyone sings along and justifies me flying down here for these shows. It really is an experience to hear so many people singing along-RS says "Muchas Gracias".uh, and that's all I know- then laughs.

Lullaby- RS gets really playful! Dances and makes faces through the whole song and the crowd loves it. so at this point it becomes an endless cycle of RS feeds off the crowd and the crowd feeds off of RS. And then-

Catch- more playing around

Hot hot hot - One huge party. I thought my eardrums would pop. All arms in the air on the "hey hey hey" part.

Please Project - Everyone seems to take a breath (plus hardly anyone knew it)-but it was a well needed rest at the 6,000 ft elevation of Mexico City.

Push- Continuation of the hot hot hot party. By now it seems everyone on the floor have become best friends and everyone is dancing.  Balloons appear from nowhere and after about 60-90 seconds I look up and there are Robert and Porl looking directly at us like we are the show rather than them! RS laughs.

Inbetween days- Robert first asks "how many of you were here last night" in his usual hard to understand way and then says "oh wait, I need to be
slower: Hoooow mmmaannny of yoouuuuu were hereee last niighttt??? and the crowd roared. Everyone sings AGAIN! And Robert seems to love it.

Just like heaven -   At this point it just seemed like the party and singing would never end

Primary - Raw power again

Never enough - something was out of tune during the intro -possibly Simon's base but at this point who cares! Robert travels with microphone in hand from one end of the stage to the other similar to Lullaby during Bloodflowers tour.

Wrong number - I'm sure you've heard it before but I'll say it again: This song rocks when you hear it live. I feel tired just writing (and remembering) this but the huge party continues.

100 years - ok, party over and no more smiles. IT was very tight. This song never gets old.

Shiver and Shake- Party is definitely over now as RS looks like he wants to actually smash someone (into pieces). Nice to hear live

Disintegration - So now we are going to full out party to full out drama and everyone loved it! I must have heard/seen this live 20 times and this ranked a close second to the Entreat version. And I'm sure you have heard this one as well but it is true: Porl is a magician! And then it ends with a "Thank you very much". At this point it feels like a full show. Everyone is laughing and shaking themselves in disbelief. The whole place is cheering and will not stop until they come out again. Lots of foot stomping and chants of "the cure, the cure!"

At night - Nicely done and straight to the point.

M - Another surprise at the amount of people that knew this

Play for today- -the party atmosphere is returning again and of course 20,000 people replaced the missing keyboard part and Robert had the biggest grin during this that he could not control (until he started singing )

A forest - Wow! I'm not really sure what to say at this point. RS watched Simon give us an extra long ending. Simon either doesn't know, or pretends not to know Robert is watching and RS just looks at him with what seems a lot of pride. Another "than Q"

Holy Hour - RS opens with "right, we haven't played these songs in a very very long time".

Other Voices - very strong and nicely done. RS sounded 15 years younger.

Faith - I had the privilage of watching RS bawl his eyes out to this in Chicago during bloodflowers, but this was a close 2nd. Though he did not cry he seemed very emotional during this. Hardly opened his eyes. He also threw in the first verse of 2 late toward the end. Then Porl puts his guitar down, then Simon puts his bass down and they watch Robert finish up, and then when he is done they all watch the final drum beats as EVERYONE in the place claps along.

Then something weird (or unplanned): Porl waves good bye, throws his pick to the person in front of me (darn!) and walks over to Simon and they start chatting. RS walks to them and looks like he is trying to convince them of something but they start to walk off stage toward Porl"s side. As they are leaving RS goes to the microphone and says "Hold on, We need to talk for a bit". Simon and Porl keep walking though and as Jason emerges from behind the drums RS tries to convince him so he goes back to his seat and Robert goes and drags Simon and Porl back on stage and says "We couldn't leave without playing this one... then yells "THE VERY LAST SONG!!!"  and then-

Boys Don't Cry. I was drained, dehydrated and completely satisfied. One last "Muchas Gracias, we'll see you again tomorrow -some of you" and that was it.

The crowd went into a roar and the lights came on - we'll see what tomorrow brings.

- MC
