News Archive - July 2004

July 31st

  • Robert is one of the judges/listmakers for this year's Shortlist Music Awards. Read the article at Billboard.

  • Clearing up the mystery of Simon's new flag:

  • "In nadine's wpb review she mentioned something about simon having a different banner on his amp, but she didn't know what kind it was. i was
looking at your antioch pics and you can clearly see that it's a reading fc banner, thanks to this pic."

    (Thanks Asa)

  • Curiosa in Toronto to be broadcast live and uncut by The Edge 102.1:

  • "Toronto radio station 102.1 the Edge, announced yesterday they will broadcast a live concert featuring rock legends The Cure.  The concert will be held at the Curiosa Festival at the Molson Amphitheater on Monday, Aug.9.  the entire Cure set will be broadcast live and uncut, with no interruptions and in real time starting at 9pm.  This will be the Cure's only live radio concert broadcast in North America.  Alan Cross, program director at The Edge says, "We're thrilled that The Cure and Universal Music Canada can help us create this unique event."

"I'm hoping it will be like the best day out there anyone has this summer, if not, you know, this decade," frontman Robert Smith says about the tour.
Announcer Dave Bookman will broadcast live from backstage, interviewing many of the bands featured  on the tour."

(Thanks to John and everyone else who sent this in)

  • Ideal Copy (who are quickly becoming the favorite record store of COF readers, judging by the e-mails I get) is upgrading orders of the US 'TEOTW' singles to UK singles:

  • Thank you so much for ordering the US release of the new Cure CD Single "The End Of The World" from The Ideal Copy!

As you may have heard, the US release has been pushed back 'til August 3rd due to a mastering error. You may ALSO have heard that the US release does NOT include the video for "The End Of The World". However, the European release includes the same 3 audio tracks as the delayed US release but ALSO includes the video for "The End Of The World"

As Cure fans ourselves, we think it's pretty crappy that the US release omits this crucial bonus video - and we're pretty sure you'd like to get
the CD single as soon as possible...

SO - we have decided to automatically UPGRADE your order for the US CD Single to the European CD Single FREE OF CHARGE -- AND better still -- it's shipping tomorrow (** see note below)!!

Not only will you get the superior European release AT NO EXTRA COST TO YOU - you'll even get it earlier!!

For those of you who would actually prefer to have the US release - please email me back as soon as possible and we will fill your order as
you originally intended (next week, obviously) - but - we figured the bulk of you would be pretty happy to hear about this!

And, as always, thank you so much for supporting The Ideal Copy! We really appreciate it.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email us anytime.

    Cheers!

    Jason, Chris & Dayna

*PLEASE NOTE - we are only offering this upgrade to our North American customers - we figure if someone from outside North America ordered the US version, they must WANT ths US version*

**ALSO PLEASE NOTE - if you ordered the US 7" Single your order won't ship until next week when the US 7" is released, but you'll still be
upgraded to the European CD Single (unless we hear back from you)

    (Thanks Joey)

    Update:
"Idealcopy.com upgraded customers who pre-ordered the single before July 20th. The UK version is now available on its own as well as the corrected US version."

    (Thanks Chris)

  • Here's an article from The Tennessean. And another one from The Cleveland Free Times.

  • (Thanks Nick, James and Stephanie)

  • A quick Curiosa merchandise update before I forget, they have added Tour Books for $20 and 2 different wallets for $30 each. The $10 stickers are actually tattoos, and the $40 handbags were not for sale in Antioch and Atlanta. They might have sold out of their supply and had to order some more.

  • Robert was a guest DJ at 99X in Atlanta on thursday:

  • "Oh yeah, in Atlanta, on 99X, Robert came in for about 1/2 hour and picked some songs to play (AFI Girl's not Grey, Blink 182's Down, Auf der Maur song, and Pictures of You.  He took a couple of calls, got some questions about how he feels concerning shorter set (said it was a trade off for doing the festival, but went on to say that he has gone on tours where the band has spent more than they have made on curfew fines), and took a call about the Gormenghast trilogy of all things.  It was good to hear him so upbeat, and it was great to see the Cure having such a wonderful time playing the music that is obviously as dear to them as it is to us!"

    (Thanks James)

  • Some Cure radio contests:

  • MTV2 Europe will be airing the making of 'TEOTW' at 9:30pm and The Cure live in Milan at 10pm tonight.

  • (Thanks Yan and Kallie)

  • As most of you should know by now, the Mexico City show sold out in record time and a second show has been added on Sept. 5th:

  • "I have a friend in Mexico and he had the hard task to get us tickets. I live in Canada so we will be going to all the Mexican shows plus the
Curiosa one in Toronto. This guy did line up for the first concert in Mexico City for 18 hours!! The link I am sending you contains information about how 20,000 tickets were sold in about 2 and a half hours. A 2nd Date is confirmed on September 5th. So far the 2nd date has sold out more than 3000 tickets. They make a stupid comparison about Back Street Boys selling tickets as fast but I wont get into it.
    http://www.esmas.com/espectaculos/musica/381194.html"

    (Thanks Luis)

"I wanted to inform you that we lucky guys at Mexico City got a second date, Sunday September 5th. Tickets sold out for the first date in around 3 hours and they started selling tickets for Sunday as soon as it sold out. I am not surprised. The Cure has a huge following in Mexico City and they have never ever been here. I expected an opening for a second date at least but not as soon. Hell, they can sell out the whole week here. I bought tickets for both dates, although I will not go on Saturday (lucky nephew and niece). Now I will be able to go since my best friend's wedding is gonna take place on Saturday. On the other hand, let me inform you the ticket sale for the Monterrey concert (Sept 2nd) is a mess. On Wednesday tickets were to start selling, but it didn't happen. Changed to Thursday. On Thursday same deal. No date for ticket sales as of yet, all I heard was someday next week. But now I won't go to Monterrey, or will I?"

    (Thanks Esteban)

Update: "Just to let you know that no more tix are available for the 2nd show in Mexico City. Considering the arena capacity is around 20,000, we can assume that 40,000 tix were sold in roughly 24 hours. However, I wonder how many are in hands of truly Cure fans, a very few I bet ... I'm sure we'll see thousands of seats available at 2, 3 or more times its original price outside the venues during the show evenings ... so far, people are currently selling 120 Usd tickets in 600 Usd."

    (Thanks Ivan)

  • And more info for Monterrey:

  • "It's me again, please correct the info: I've telephoned the ticket company (SuperBoletos) who manages The Cure concert in Monterrey and
they still don't know when the sale will start, whether monday 2nd august or any other day throughout next week. Here is though, an important note for all fans in the area and others coming from abroad: if you telephone the company this week, they collect your name and phone number. They promise to call you as soon as the sale starts and to give you preference (God knows if this will be true). Seating distribution may be consulted here:
http://www.arenamonterrey.com/wtweb/web_page/asientos.html The one corresponding to The Cure will be "Show Lateral" Phone numbers for Super Boletos are:  81-51-38-06 (Monterrey metro area); 01-800-26-53-867 (outside Monterrey metro area)
    "

    (Thanks Adrian)

  • Some Cure articles in recent magazines:

  • "There's a new interview in the latest Q magazine (http://www.q4music.com/nav?page=q4music.about.currentissue). Interview in the magazine only..."

    (Thanks Steven)

"The Cure are mentioned in a new Rolling Stone article (August 19 issue with Lindsay Lohan on the cover).  The article is about 1/2 page long, "Summer Ticket Prices Slashed: Van Halen, The Cure and others cut to as low as ten dollars due to slow sales".  There are no pictures of the band.

The Cure are in the August 2nd issue of People magazine (with Martha Stewart on the cover).  The article is about ½ page long and has a brief interview with Robert and a picture of the band."

    Capacity: 17,200 comfortably seated
NOTE: I'd never been in this Arena (neither Sports' Palace in Mexico City), but I've heard (A LOT) that accoustic is great in the Monterrey Arena... not the same for the Sports' Palace though. :(

    (Thanks Leobasita)

  • There's a new interview with Robert (done by Davey Havok of AFI) in the Sept. issue of Alternative Press.

  • (Thanks James)

  • Interview on German radio tonight:

  • "tonight (26.07.at 20:00 cet) on german radio-station "FRITZ" there is an interview with robert and they will talk about the new album. more
informations here (in german): http://www.fritz.de/_/programm/soundgarden/abend/detail_jsp/key=30617.html "

    (Thanks Olli)

Update: "The Radio Fritz special didn't contain (m)any news... the same subjects as always: the title of the album, the cover,...only interesting things: robert didn't rule out the possibility of another album - which would possibly be titled 'The Cure Volume 2' + and the band + Ross would love to go into the studio again in the not too distant future. He mentioned as well, that his amount of words he can sing + that work musically is limited + used 'Where the birds always sing' as an example: lyrically one of the best things he has ever written, musically by far the weakest on 'Bloodflowers'
Songs played during that special: The end of the world, Maybe someday, alt.end, A forest (2001 acoustic version), Lost, Where the birds always sing,
    Taking off, Never."

    (Thanks Dennis)

  • A note for you Melissa Auf Der Maur fans:

  • "I also got to meet melissa auf der mar just before the cure went on. it seems she's having a booth set up right before they go onstage. signing
    autographs promoting her album.."

    (Thanks Jason)

  • Curespotting:

  • "I was just checking out the Alkaline Trio Forum ~ a message (Fri Jul 09, 2004 2:55 pm ) from their drummer, Derek Grant ends with: "oh, do
yourself a favor and pick up the new cure album. " here's the link: http://blood-pact.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1196"

    (Thanks Joey)

"This is an extract from bass player Richard Jones' latest diary entry on Stereophonics.com (http://www.stereophonics.com/band/) : "MOVE festival,
last gig of the year for us and we thought that it just might be good weather. was it my arse! It rained all day and all night and the crowd stayed for every minute. Good bunch of acts on over the four days and we managed to catch a few, watched a hour of The Cure the night before and enjoyed them banging through their set of classics and new songs."

    Cool...!!!"

    (Thanks Barbara)

"In a french magazine called "Science et Vie Junior", this month's issue is a special one dealing with strange phenomenas (near death experiences, UFOs, quantic physics...) ; a very good article is talking about mental illnesses : a few lines are about a girl who knew a sort of short desease while believing Arthur Rimbaud was talking to her and ... "Robert Smith, the singer of The Cure, came out of a poster, sat in her room and a chat for 20 minutes". Funny, isn't it. (NB : the girl is completly OK now). "

    (Thanks David)

    July 25th

  • Robert interview in the New York Post.

  • (Thanks Mike)

  • 'TEOTW' debuts at #25 in the UK Top 40 singles chart.

  • (Thanks Marco, Ali, Brandon)

  • Just heard from Nadine again, and here are some of the prices for the merchandise:

  • Mouse Pad - $20 (album cover)
    Hoodies - $65 (1 black)
    Long sleeve - $35 (1 grey)
Baby and reg t's - $35 (one "curiosa" and about 8 others, black, pink, blue)
Small messenger bags - $40 (2 - red heart or white swirl)
    Tattoos - $10 (hearts)
Leather wristband - $22 (yellow The Cure)
Cap - $30 (black with The Cure on it)
Bucket hat - $35 (Grey with The Cure on it)
    Poster - $15
    Pins & keychain - $7
Fanny packs - $45 (same designs as msgr bags)

Also, she got a chance to talk to Robert last night for about 30 minutes and he did say that they'll be doing a different setlist tonight,  asked her if she had a request, and she picked Jupiter Crash or Like Cockatoos. So if they play either of those tonight, you know who to thank or blame. : )

  • Final results of the "Which of the bonus tracks from 'The Cure' is your favorite?" poll:

  • Going Nowhere (331) 32%
    This Morning (307) 29%
    Truth Goodness & Beauty (306) 29%
    Fake (96) 9%

    Total Votes: 1041

  • I know a lot of you are disappointed about last night's setlist, but it's just one night! Give them a few shows before you get too "bummed out" about it. They always start a bit safe, then start getting more adventurous as the tour progresses. Remember , they have somewhere between 50-75 songs to choose from, and have only played 20 so far. There's a lot more to come.  : )

  • Here's a scan of the Q review of 'The Cure'.

  • (Thanks MickelCure)

  • Some interviews with Robert from the Tampa Tribune, Sun-Sentinel, The Star Ledger and Ireland On-Line.

    July 24th

  • Just got a call from Nadine in West Palm and here are some of the notes she gave me:

  • The time schedule posted on the gates was as follows:

    4pm - Doors
    5 - 5:25pm - Head Automatica (Stage 2)
    5:30 - 6pm - Mogwai (Stage 1)
    6:05 - 6:30pm - Cooper Temple Clause (Stage 2)
    6:35 - 7:05pm - The Rapture (Stage 1)
    7:10 - 7:40pm - Auf Der Maur (Stage 2)
    7:45 - 8:25pm - Interpol (Stage 1)
    8:30 - 9pm - Thursday (Stage 2)
    9:15 - 11pm - The Cure (Stage 1)
    11pm - Curfew

The Cure have a ton of merchandise. At least 8 different shirts (including all of the "character" and "swirly" ones we've already seen) and a special Curiosa Tour shirt with all of the bands on it. They also have caps, bucket hats, a messenger bag ($40), "baby doll" shirts, keychains, maybe a mousepad (or the 7" single, she wasn't sure), and more. So bring a LOT of money. : )

Here's the setlist for Interpol: Obstacle 1, Say Hello To The Angels, Evil, NYC, Roland, Slow Hands, Leif Erickson, NARC, PDA.

The stage design doesn't look to be anything too special , just a couple of arcs over the stage for the lights and a white curtain behind them. Jason's drum kit is all silver, and Simon doesn't have his England flag over his gear anymore, but he does have one for a football (soccer) team, though she couldn't read what it said.

Nadine will call me with the setlist shortly after they finish, and it will be posted on the WPB page.

  • Just checked TM for Tampa, and there are still some excellent seats left. I just pulled 2 seats in 102 (center), Row E, then pulled up two pit tickets. If you've been waiting, now's the time to buy.

  • To everyone going to this weekend's Curiosa shows, have a great time! Please send in a review, photos, etc. if you can, and try to let us all know the time schedule for the 2 stages. Also, let us know what sort of merchandise they have and the prices, and what you thought of the other bands. Thanks, and have fun!

  • Pit tickets for Phoenix, Nashville, Chicago, San Diego, Camden and Denver:

  • "I have two extra pit tickets for the Camden, NJ Curiosa show this Sunday 8/1.  Face value or best offer. Email me if interested."

"I still have two pit tickets (next to each other) for the Sunday, August 1 Camden, NJ show. Unfortunately, my friends are not as interested as I
hoped.  Of course, I'd liked to get back the face value I paid ($92 each), but I will offer a discount if needed.  I will be at the show, so I can definitely
meet the buyer for the exchange. E-mail here."

    (Thanks Joe)

Yes, I'm changing my ticket sales policy, at least for now. So if you have pit tickets (pit tickets only!) for sale (at face value!), let me know and I'll post it. Also, let me know when they're sold, so that I can remove your listing.

  • Looks like there's been a change to that Resident Evil 2 soundtrack. The Cure will still be on it, but they've changed their track from 'alt.end' to 'Us Or Them'. Read the story at Billboard.

  • (Thanks Andrew)

  • I've been hearing that sales for Curiosa at The Gorge are very poor so far, the Amnesty International auction doesn't even have a bid for that show as I write this, and now comes word of a possible venue change for the show:

  • "a friend of ours was in washington today & heard the end's dj talking about the cure's gorge show... (as you know the end is presenting the show along with h.o.b.) he mentioned that despite $20 tix the show may end up with a change of venue. possibly the white river amphitheatre... although there is no official word, i thought it was important enough to pass it on. the gorge is a 5 hour drive for us, but for others making hotel arrangements, they may want to hold off a few more days."

Has anyone else heard anything about this?

    (Thanks Jamie & Robi)

  • Here it is, Roger & Simon in the Nashville Rage

  • The Cure are an Unhappy Band

Robert Smith and crew roll into Starwood

Things are going remarkably well for The Cure these days. Despite a slump in the record and touring industries, this highly influential UK five-piece are in the middle of a resurgence in popularity. It is an especially uplifting situation considering that the band is close to its third decade as a music-making entity, yet, unlike the other senior citizens who can claim that kind of career longevity, these guys are still considered cool.

You can see their video on MTV2. Their self-made Curiosa festival is actually selling tickets (in stark contrast to this year's ill-fated Lollapalooza tour). And while most of the bands and artists who first arrived on the scene at the same time as The Cure have long since vacated the realm of radio, The Cure's latest single (The End of The World) is climbing up to the band's old, familiar spot at the top of the charts.
With all that, why are The Cure so unhappy?

When The Rage caught up with The Cure at their rehearsal studio in the UK, their enthusiasm for the upcoming festival and their exuberance at the success of their single were evident, but when talk turned to the making of their new self-titled record, the mood changed.
The big news about The Cure's new album so far has had nothing to directly with its content. It has focused more on their controversial choice to work with nu-metal producer Ross Robinson (Korn, Limp Bizkit). Many worried that The Cure would come out of the recording process sounding, well, processed, but fortunately the noise made on The Cure isn't all that far removed from what the band has been doing for years. The recording sessions, however, were far, far different from what the band had previously experienced, from the good (Robert Smith shared the meaning of his lyrics with the band for the first time, and the whole album was recorded live in-studio) to the bad, which Cure members Simon Gallup and Roger O'Donnell primarily attribute to Robinson's presence.

''It's different for each one of us. Robert and Ross got on very well,'' Gallup begins with decorum. ''I didn't get on with Ross. I personally found his input stifling. I think I can speak for a nice percentage of the band as well — we were sort of brought up in the way where you go into the studio and do your best performance and that's it.''

''I really enjoyed the group (aspect) of it, but I didn't enjoy working with Ross,'' O'Donnell adds. ''I think he was useful in some ways, but there were such cultural divides in approach that I found it difficult.''

''He'd come in and he'd start throwing things around,'' Gallup recalls with annoyance. ''He didn't like us when we played note perfect. He wanted more passion, so he'd actually come up, and if I was trying to play note perfect he'd slam his hands across the bass. More than once he nearly got the bass sideways in his mouth. You couldn't leave the studio and turn that tension off. It was a very traumatic time for some of us, and not one I'd like to repeat.''

''I just don't subscribe to a lot of the things Ross uses as his tools of the trade. All that psycho-babble stuff. I just think it's b.s., really,'' O'Donnell states flatly. ''We've been doing this for long enough, we don't need to be told who we are. We don't need to have people tell us we're The Cure. We know we are. And we can reach within ourselves and find motivation and emotion.''

''Personally I would like in the future for the group to go in without a producer and see what would happen if we were just left to our own devices. I think we've got enough creativity within us to experiment, and I think we could do the songs justice,'' Gallup says. ''At the end of it, they're our songs and we know how they should sound.''

  • Just a heads-up to those of you in Florida, Tennessee and Georgia. There should be articles or interviews in your local papers in the days to come. Please let me know if you see them, and send scans or transcriptions if you can. Those of you in Nashville should especially be on the lookout, as Roger and Simon have done interviews with your local paper, and it's supposed to be even stronger than the comments Simon made in Tutto.

  • Update: Here's one from the Palm Beach Post. And here's one with The Rapture from the Miami Herald. St. Petersburg Times talks to Luke Jenner and Paul Banks.

    (Thanks Tempest and Kate)

  • We finally have an official time for The Cure to take the stage at Curiosa - 9:15 each night. So given the 11pm curfew at most venues, The Cure will be doing a 1 hour and 45 minute set. That's official and confirmed, so no more e-mails with theories on how they will still be able to play a 3 hour set. No one wanted to believe me, but I'll forgive you. : )

  • More defective singles for the collectors:

  • "Hastings is really good at carrying US singles. I had no trouble finding a defective copy of TEOTW at hastings. So, if people are looking for them, that'd be the first place i'd go. "

  • Oh you're not leaving here until you read more reviews of 'The Cure' : )

  • Houston Press

"I found this in an antipodean traveler's magazine here in London (TNT) a few weeks back.

    The Cure
    TNT Magazine July 5, 2004
    by Will Fulford-Jones

And so among the older generation, the struggle for relevance continues. Morrissey appears to have won the battle if not the war, with a mediocre
album whose commercial success has nonetheless re-bestowed on him the iconic status he tossed away around the time of the execrable Maladjusted.  Depeche Mode, on the other hand, are on the fast track to humiliation after a fallow period  punctuated by a couple of utterly desperate solo albums, and while the Pixies' recent shows were belters, there wasn't a new song in sight.

The Cure, of course, haven't been in any way relevant since Dubya's dad was in the White House, Thatcher was in 10 Downing and you were in high school.  But their lucky 13th album comes dressed in a measure of bravado that suggests they've forgotten the past 15 years and have finally made a worthy follow-up to the career-defining Disintegration.  Naming your album after your band is the kind of confidence trick artists pull when they're starting out, not when they're decades into a career.  But following on from the dismal Wild Mood Swings and the not-much-better Bloodflowers, it's no surprise The Cure feel positive about The Cure.

They have, at least in part, producer Ross Robinson to thank.  On paper, it's a highly unlikely marriage:  Robinsons' resume includes work with Korn,
Slipknot and Limp Bizkit, hardly kindred spirits with Robert Smith.  But the choice proves inspired.  The Cure is the most convincingly intense record
they've made since 1989's Disintegration, whether on the thrash of Us or Them or the epic The Promise.  But it's also, conversely, the band at their
most confident and their most relaxed.  If The Cure is a definitive record, it's one by default; if Bloodflowers and Wild Mood Swings sounded like The
Cure trying hard to be The Cure, this time around, they're simply being themselves.  In other words, this is ultimately just another Cure album, but
since we haven't had a good one of those years, it's more welcome than it might have been.  Whether it'll mean a damn thing to anyone younger than the band themselves, who are now 26 years old, is another matter entirely.

    Score:  7 "

  • Chart update for 'The Cure':

  • Italy - Drops from #5 to #13.

    Germany - Drops from #14 to #22.

    and for 'Teotw':

Italy - #19 in the singles chart

    Germany - enters at #47

Edge 102.1 Toronto Thursday 30 - down this week to #15 after last week's high of #10.   But on the bright side, after playing the song the DJ gave a huge spiel about how awesome Curiosa was going to be; then that one of the perks working in radio is the occasional chance to talk with an artist that you've adored for ages and ages, and the incredible experience it was for him to actually talk to *Robert Smith* (he said it 'in bold' teehee) on the phone a couple months back, and telling him that one of the 3 best concerts he'd ever been to in his life was the Disintegration tour.

  • Curespotting:

  • "It has been a "busy" week here in Brazil.. The Cure was in the front cover of the "Arts and Leisure" supplement of three of the most
important Brazilian newspapers ( Folha de Sao Paulo, Zero Hora and O Globo )... some interviews and positive reviews, but nothing really new
to worth the translation. Also, MTV Brasil premiered "The Cure - Making a Video" last Wednesday... the clip might be entering their playlist now..."
