After a rather stressful drive up to Munich
(unfortunately this time no gig in Stuttgart which is closer to my home)
incl. a traffic jam, I finally arrived at the parking lot of "Olympiahalle"
(at least I knew where to go, as I'd seen the band here back in 2000).
Obviously I'd missed the support band - when I was downstairs waiting near
the mixing desk, the lights went out and the first sounds of the "Plainsong"
intro played to a cheering crowd... It was okay as a starter, but didn't
exactly knock me out. Prayers For Rain was more of a surprise, as well as
A Strange Day. At this point the gig became really emotional for me and
tears were welling in my eyes... (I thought it doesn't matter at all, as
I'm on my own and nobody knows me. Imagine my shock when about 8 songs later
I recognised a couple of old aquaintances standing right next to me!!)
Some of the highlights for me were: The Blood, Lovesong, Pictures of
you, Push, Never Enough and Disintegration. New songs Please Project and
A Boy I Never Knew sounded okay to me, but not spectacular.
The whole band seemed to enjoy this gig and the audience reaction.
Porl Thompson (who is a great guitar player) did a good job in replacing
some of the keyboard parts on certain songs. In my opinion it worked surprisingly
well on most of them, however I think e.g. Lullaby and Why Can't I Be You
would be much better with a real keyboard player...
Lovecats was a pleasant surprise! It sounded a bit "under-rehearsed",
but nevertheless it was a lot of fun. I've never been a big fan of Let's
Go To Bed, the new song Freak Show fitted in right after it though (I hope
I'll enjoy the studio version a bit more).
The 2nd encore with the very old stuff was good fun too (especially
Grinding Halt and 10.15 Saturday Night). I had the impression that the audience
really wanted to hear Play For Today, as they started singing that famous
keyboard melody during the 2nd encore! And it seemed to please the band
as they returned for another encore, doing this song and A Forest!!
For me, it was a very good concert and well worth the drive to Munich.
I'd seen the band live quite a lot between 1992 and 2002, this one was
not the best, but certainly one of the best experiences.

After Stockholm, Munich was my second concert of the 4Tour. I really
liked the concert in Stockholm even if it seemed not very good prepared,
but I was not sure, if Munich would be as enjoyable. The setlists of the
other concerts were too similar. But I was proved wrong. After the always
perfect start with one of my favorite songs – Plainsong - a really good,
powerful concert followed. This time even with much more background images,
some nice animations and nice light effects.
Despite the everlasting discussion, if only non-hit-lovers are “true”
cure fans: It was nice to see all the people dancing on their seats, to
hearthem singing to the music of my favorite band. It was pure fun to sing
along Friday I’m in love with thousands others, whether they are “true” fans
or not,
whether the song is a hit or not, whether I like it or not. It was
really a good evening, shared with people in good mood and a band, that
seemed to have fun, doing a favor to the audience. Of course, the setlist
is predictable, but at the moment it feels more, that predictable means,
one can be sure, there is something good you can look forward to, both
if you are waiting for the “hits” and if you prefer a bit more uncommon
songs like one hundred years or shake dog shake.
My “advice” is to leave the “true” cure fan attitude behind for the
evening, sing as loud as you can, dance like “you can’t hear the beat” and
you will have a great experience. And it seems, that is exactly, what the
band does and wants the audience to do. Never had more the feeling than
at this tour. And the audience in Munich seemed to enjoy it.
Again three very entertaining hours both for the old Cure-fan and the
only the hits loving visitor and I am really looking forward to Paris Bercy.
