How Beautiful You Are - Play For Today

 Reviews

The concert in Warsaw left us on a high, so I was expecting a different set-list in Katowice. The Cure didn’t disappoint. The Warsaw show was “dark” while Katowice offered lighter, brighter mood.

At 17:30 they let us inside and me and my friend Svetlana manage to get a position in the first row right in front of Porl. I’m glad that we’re not in the center, because standing in front of wonderful Mr. Thompson means a change of the perspective; during the concert I can’t (almost) take my eyes off him, the thing he does with the strings are stunning…

At seven o’clock the stage is occupied by 65 Days of Static. They play the same set-list as the night before while I’m hoping for at least one unfamiliar song… The lights fade out once more…

‘Tape’ sounds very strange, I don’t recognize it at first… Here comes Porl, he sees our flag, waves to us and the tortured madness of ‘Open’ begins… However, it seems to me that during this song Porl had some troubles with his two white guitars, he switched from one to another, frustrated. The sound was unbalanced as well – I hear Porl’s part separately from the other instruments… ‘Fascination Street ’, ‘Alt.end’ – the sound gets better, Robert’s voice is deep and clear… ‘The Walk’ – I love this piece (hate me but I really do) and it comes out astonishingly amazing on guitars! ‘The End of the World ’, ‘Lovesong’, ‘A Letter to Elise’ – one of my favorite songs from “Wish”, sad, fragile ballad about the dreams that came true way too late…; ‘To Wish Impossible Things’ – heartbreaking, crystal surprise of the evening. ‘Pictures of You’ – Porl looks at me, makes an evil face and winks! Very funny. ‘Lullaby’ is the theatrical miniature, I can’t take my eyes from Robert’s hands…  ‘From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea’ is so intense I can’t breathe! Then the pop-trio follows - ‘Hot, Hot, Hot!!!’, ‘Please Project ’, ‘Push’, the smiles of the band members set this place on fire! One more song I was hoping for - ‘How Beautiful You Are’, I’m at loss for words, it’s so beautiful… ‘In-between Days’, ‘Just like Heaven’ – the fans behind us are dancing wildly, trying to press us into the fence… And then, a little bit out of place after two major Cure-pop hits - ‘A boy I never knew’, a song so touching and sad that it makes me cry; Robert himself shares a tear o two… The despair is replaced by angst of ‘Shake Dog Shake’… ‘Never enough’ presents us Robert’s catwalk, he’s so close that it’s almost unreal… He keeps reminding me of the huge plush doll. =) Sometimes I wish to kill the photographers, because in reality Smith is not fat, just a little bit fluffy. ‘Wrong Number’ is even better than in Warsaw, this time no-one passes out! ‘Signal to Noise’ – one of the rare b-sided played live, another dream… In Katowice there were no screens, only lights but ‘One Hundred Years’ does not need eloquent pictures to make an impression! The main set ends, naturally, with ‘End’ - “Please, stop loving me – I’m not of these things”. No way, Robert – we will always love Cure’s music, sorry!

Now, encores – the time to dance and sing along! Four songs from “17 Seconds” have enormous success, but “Oh-Oh-Oh” part on ‘Play for Today’ is almost inaudible – what’s wrong with you, people?! =( Robert announces “another travel back in time” -  ‘Three Imaginary Boys’ and I know the my greatest dream of all will come true at last - FIRE IN CAIRO!!! I forget about the pain, I dance and sing along with all my heart, I’m in paradise! ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ returns me back to the cruel reality… The last four songs - ‘Jumping Someone Else’s Train’, ‘Grinding Halt’, ‘10:15’ and ‘Killing An Arab’ pass by very quick and Robert says “Good night”… Is it really the end? They come back for one more song – ‘Why Can’t I Be You’, Roberts approaches our side of the stage, I’m dancing like in the video, he looks right at me, grimaces and I begin to blush because I’m so shy… =) The only disappointment is the length of the show; it seems so much shorter than the one in Warsaw! Maybe they couldn’t play longer because of the curfew, who knows…

After the concert we manage to meet Jason and take our pictures with him. I’d like to thank him very much for being so nice to us – thank you!

Lots of love,
B-Flower.
