Review at Gaffa

On first impression, Forum seems like a cavernous hall..I got there early enough to secure a good position very close to the stage, in front of  Porl.
First things first….if you go and see The Cure in the coming months do not miss 65 Days..They played a 30 minutes set of heavy yet melodic and beautiful instrumental music.

The Cure walked on stage at 8pm and started with 3 songs from Disintegration. The acoustics were very good from my vantage standing point..The crowd was an up for it youthful bunch, which  was a change from Stockholm where it took some time to warm up.
Lovesong and Pictures of You brought nothing new but To wish impossible things was a nice surprise, even though the  beginning felt a bit under rehearsed..The first big cheers of the night was for Lullaby...Please project was also well received…Porl’s guitar playing has been the subject of praise in recent reviews and is completely justified..I felt he was really into it, eyes closed, lost in his playing..He does bring a lot to songs like  Inbetween Days or Just like heaven for exemple, fittingly replacing keyboards with great guitar parts.
Another welcome surprise, I think, was Primary..It was tighly played and I personally loved the backdrop which was the cover of the single with heavy shades of blue, red and yellow..

Robert spoke very little between songs, just saying thank you, but at one stage apologised for his” non existent Danish, even after all these years ,but it didn’t matter” he said, “as I talk such nonsense anyway”.
He called  Us or Them a”cartoon kind of song”,no doubt refering to the news, the day before, of some arrests in Denmark in connection with the Muslim cartoons story that broke at the end of 2006.
The whole set is played at a relentless pace, and suddenly you find yourself 2 hours in, and it feels like you’ve been there barely 10 minutes….The set is very similar to the one played in Stockholm and brings few new songs… Signal to noise is a good choice and another nice surprise as far as I’m concerned..
The 17 Seconds encore is predictable, I feel some guitar parts on Play for today were being experimented(not to my liking). The lack of keyboards on A  Forest means the start of the song is barely recognisable at first, so much so that even Simon had a bemused look on his face…giving Porl and Robert a “what is this”kind of look!!..he was lost for a second but he soon caught up, working his bass hard on his final part..
The pop encore is again very predictable, with Close to Me and WCIBY getting a really good reception…Porl’s guitar playing has to be praised again on those  songs…I really think he makes them work….Freak Show(as it is now firmly called) is fun and Robert looks like he enjoys singing it very much. Probably seeing  surprised looks on some faces he told the crowd to remember that A Forest was probably perceived the same way the first times it was ever played live…
The old school encore was fast and furious, the crowd surging forward on BDC and Jumpin´
Someone else’s train…Robert broke a string on 10.15 but it didn’t seem to affect his playing….Finally Killing Another was “For Denmark”…which was a nice way of ending 3 hours of another great performance..
I was lucky enough to be given the official setlist from the side deck, and it should be noted that If only tonight we could sleep and The Kiss were slotted to be played after Disintegration but were not , as well as 3IB and Fire in Cairo at the start of the last encore, but again those 2 songs were left out…

I hope you enjoy the shows as much as I did…I now look forward to Paris and London!!
