 Reviews

These are a few comments on the opening night of the European tour at the Hovet in Stockholm.

The show took place in an ice hockey stadium that has a capacity of approximately 8000 for rock shows.  As the floor area was divided into three sections, my friends and I managed to get into to section right in front of the stage just before The Cure came on.  Much to our surprise that section never became overcrowded or uncomfortable, but that must have been because the security people limited the number of people entering it.

The first thing I noticed is the quality of the sound.  The mix appeared to be just right from where we were standing.  The lighting seemed to be quite colourful, perhaps reflecting the "happy" feel to the show (for example, lime green and tangerine during "Wrong Number"), and there were a few video images on the screens behind the stage.

As you will have seen, the setlist itself was not very surprising.  However, I was very pleased not to hear "Fascination Street" as they seem to play it at every show and for some reason it's not one of my favourites.  In my opinion the setlist was kept "safe" in order to please as many of the people in the crowd (which was quite mixed) as possible.  In any event, it was good to hear the new songs.  Each of them is very different but what strikes me is the simplicity of their arrangements (having said that, I've only heard them once live).

Robert's voice was very clear and strong throughout the whole of the show.  As usual he didn't say very much between songs.  Apart from making a few comments about the new songs, he said something like "Still haven't learned Swedish!" before "Pictures of You", "As it's Saturday night ..." before the second encore and "It seems we've still got ten minutes" before the final encore.   He seemed to be having a good time towards the end of the show as he smiled quite a lot.

As far as I could make out, Porl (whose guitar playing really is exceptional) had lines drawn on his head and Simon had died blond hair.  One slightly funny, surprising or controversial (I am not sure which) moment happened during "Never Enough".  While Robert was singing at one end of the stage, Porl and Simon kissed each other on the lips.  I didn't know they were that close but it looks like they're getting on quite well at the moment...

Finally, since the setlist contained few surprises, I hope it will evolve as the tour goes on and the release date for the new album approaches, but overall it was a very solid performance.

Below the setlist of the Stockholm-Concert. No real surprises, but three of the new songs: The already known "Please project", "A boy I never knew" and a third song, called "Freakshow" (if I understood it right). In my opinion the song fitted into the place, where it was played: In the Let's go to bed area. It missed my taste, but was not really bad. Unfortunately I was not able to record it or parts of it with my mobile.

The concert as a whole was really good. The band /Robert seemed to be pleased doing the fans a favour playing an extra long set. The sound was good and the audience (around 9.800 people fit into the "Hovet"-hall and it was sold out for months until three days prior to the event - but that seemed to be a tactic to avoid a black market) at the beginning a bit reseved, but later more enthusiatic. I don' want to comment every song, but there are some, that work live much better, than you expect, when you know the album version: Push, From the edge of the deep green sea, The kiss, Wrong number and of course the complete first and third encore (but the encore-songs are already great on the albums...). The missing keyboard is - in my opinion - in some songs (How beautiful you are, Just like heaven) a loss, but most of the songs work even without the keyboards. Altogether enjoyable and entertaining both for the old Cure-fan and the only the the hits loving visitor.

A bit disappointing was the fact, that there were no special background images or videos created for this tour. Only two images (Lovesong, Pictures of you) were shown and one video (Jumping someone else's train). Also the merchandise (I will try to send a picture later on) seemed to be a "auxiliary-solution". No special designs, no real tour-poster, T-shirts with average band picture on front and tour dates on the back. Probably we are a bit spoiled by the nice designs of the Disintegration- and Wish-era, but a bit more creativity would have been nice, so that the audience and fans could have had the feeling, that this tour was meticulous prepared to make it an event for the fans.

I will prove this impression in Berlin and Paris... :-) Fotos of the tickets and the tourbook to be sent.

i was in the stockholm concert and im going to write a little review. i cannot make a super review cos i was not so close to the band, i was
sitting up at porl side.

1- the place and the sound was extremely good, except the bass was too much loud, but can hear robert voice very clear.

2- the setlist was absolutely predictable, they changed 0 sogngs of the australian/assian tour. for me, in the middle of the concert too many
hard rock songs like never enough, use or them, end, shake dog shake, all sounds the same. the highlights for me was the last encore, cos they
play quick and with passion.

3- the band looks good but its clear that its their first concert cos they seem to have some mistakes during some songs but this was normal.
simon looks young with her brand new gold blondie hair and non-stop good feelings dance. robert looks in good shape. porl looks strange with a
skirt that can see his bare legs and make up like the last photos of 2008. jason looks same as always.

4. the band sound more or less good, simon played better than never, robert sang like an angel, going low and up , loud and whisper (my wife
1st concert was impressed about RS voice), and playing with energy. porl seems not concentrate, just he started to play good at the end of the
concert. during the kiss and a forest in some part just he didnt play (in this songs the cure need porl as much as ever).

5. they add some samples keyboards in close to me.

6. for the new songs, i think they sound very good, please proyect and boy i never knew sounded beatiful, and freak show (robert said name of
the song when he played ex-dont say anything) was in the middle of the why cant i be u/lets go to bed encore and fit with this 2 songs in quality. i think they are same good as the old songs and lets see how they sound in the record. by now how this 3 songs sound make me ilusions about new album.

ps/can robert change his hair to blondie same simon and we will have a new goku of dragon ball?
