  • Steve Severin has posted an explanation in his forum about the controversy over Robert's vocals on the 'Blue Sunshine' bonus disc:

  • "All the vocals on CD2 are from 1983. I admit it is a bit confusing calling them "RS vocal demo" but this is how it worked.....

All the Glove tracks were written in the studio (bar PMWK) so the music you hear isn't a demo per se, it's a rough mix of the final thing. Lyrics were written at different times in the procedings so whenever they were, Robert would do a "guide vocal'. That explains why some tracks are more developed than others. For instance, I hadn't written the bass parts for "LAA" when RS did the guide but the strings had been put on ORGY before he sang. Does that make sense?

We could only find these versions on cassette and Robert did some extensive "soundsoap" work on them going as far as stripping out the vocal, treating it and adding it back in. We've obviously done a good job because so many people think it's all new!

Whateverrrrrrrrrrrr.............it's 16 new tracks....you would think most fans would be leaping for joy, wouldn't you?"

  • Don't think I've posted this before - the official website of Suretone Records, The Cure's new label/imprint/whatever. If you don't know what this Suretone thing is all about, please see the March 27th update in the archives.

    7. The Cure - 'Mint Car'

As one of the high points of The Cure's concept album, Wild Mood Swings, "Mint Car" truly is on the overly enthusiastic side of the spectrum. And
talk about happy: "Sun is up, so happy I could burst," Robert Smith declares. "Yeah, you went through me head first." Ooookayyy. That just
sounds painful. But whatever makes you happy, and if Smith's exuberance as exemplified in the cheerful delivery of the (admittedly nonsensical)
lyrics is any indication, this is the real thing - it's not hard to believe The Cure really was happy writing and recording this song. And if this song has the power to cheer The Cure up, then for crying out loud, it should certainly work for everyone else."

  • Roger signs 3 record deal with Great Society/World's Fair (distribution & support through Warner Brothers), releases 'The Truth In Me' on Oct. 24th, 2006, and announces plans for an autumn tour:

  • ROGER O’DONNELL

    THE TRUTH IN ME

Roger O’Donnell, long known as the man behind the keys for legendary bands like the Cure and earlier for The Psychedelic Furs, steps out on his own with his beautiful new album The Truth in Me.  A collection of songs composed and recorded using a single instrument, the Moog Voyager.  An instrument with it’s own cult following, the Moog is generally not known for the very warm and undeniably human sounds that become immediately apparent upon listening to this fascinating work.
Always an artist of unique vision, Roger O’Donnell’s playing and songwriting can be found on era defining hits such as the Cure’s Disintegration and he has performed on some of the biggest tours and festivals all over the world including Coachella.  His contributions have always had an amazing influence on the bands he played and wrote with.  Following the inclusion of his song “Another Year Away” on the soundtrack for the Moog Documentary, Roger was encouraged by one of the film’s producers to do an entire album orchestrated with a Moog Voyager.  Since Roger had enjoyed working with the Voyager on the soundtrack, the idea appealed to him: “My initial idea (for the soundtrack) was to try and write a song and record it using only a Moog and that’s what happened. I knew from my early days that I could orchestrate using mono analogue synths so in a way I was revisiting my roots.”
“Definitely not a concept album, more of an album concept, it is a simpler way of composing using limited instrumentation where the emotion comes from each individual note. Consciously un-compromised or commercial, it’s a mainly instrumental journey through my musical influences and where I am now (vocalist Erin Lang sings 3 songs).  I was also inspired by Bjork’s use of a single instrument, the voice, on her record Medulla.  I found the Voyager really easy to work with and thought that maybe I had found my own voice and could do something that was entirely original.  Finally, music that I am satisfied with and that satisfies me, The Truth In Me says what I have been trying to say for a long time.”
The Truth In Me has inspired a number of musicians to join Roger in his exploration.  Remixes have already been done of a number of the album’s tracks by such luminaries as Jimmy Tamborello of The Postal Service/Dntel/Figurine, Kieran Hebden of FourTet, The Notwist/Console, and Jimmy LaValle of The Album Leaf.
Roger O’Donnell will be touring the US through the Fall of ’06 and beyond with an appearance at this years CMJ festival in New York.

“…a collection of songs that shows the sensuous and moody side of the Voyager.” Electronic Musician

    For Immediate Release:

Great Society Announces Launch, First Signing

Managers for The Flaming Lips, Devendra Banhart, and Owner of Definitive Jux Establish New Record Label

First signing is former member of The Cure, Roger O'Donnell, debut release Oct. 24th '06

(New York, NY) Two years after merging their collective years of experience as artist and label managers, the founders of World’s Fair have announced the creation of a new label, Great Society.

Scott Booker is the long time manager of the wildly successful Flaming Lips.  More recently, he has also served as manager for Elliot Smith and indie rock darlings British Sea Power. "World's Fair puts us in a great position to discover new talent from all over the world - we look forward to our newest challenge.” said Mr. Booker when asked to comment on this new endeavor. Kevin Wortis, once known as the manager of seminal art rockers The Swans, also served as general manager for Play It Again Sam’s US operations.  He has been manager for Devendra Banhart for the last several years where he has seen that artist rise from relative obscurity to critical touchstone. Amaechi Uzoigwe co-founded legendary record label Definitive Jux Records in 2000 with partner El-P and quickly rose to the top of independent hip hop with releases from El-P, RJD2, Cannibal Ox, Aesop Rock and Mr. Lif.  He also manages Beans, Pela, Mike Ladd, The Gray Kid and Vic Thrill, and previously managed alt-urban stalwarts Company Flow, Anti Pop Consortium and Saul Williams.  “Great Society represents an incredible opportunity for us to release high quality music regardless of genre or style,” says Uzoigwe.  “We look forward to building a home for uniquely talented artists and introducing their music to the world.”

Great Society will operate as part of The World’s Fair Label Group.  Since it’s inception The World’s Fair Label Group has established itself as a respected home to some of the finest labels from both the US and UK including Bella Union, BBE, Wichita and Def Jux.  The company has overseen the marketing, distribution and management for successful releases such as RJD2 Since We Last Spoke, The Cribs The New Fellas, Morcheeba The Antidote and Dr. Octagon The Return of Dr. Octagon.  The company is currently seeing great success with Midlake’s The Trials of Van Occupanther.

With this kind of experience and triumph bound with true musical exploration at it’s foundation, Great Society is set to become one of the most interesting and successful labels to emerge in a very long time.  As if to prove the point, the label’s debut will be the unlikely solo release by Roger O’Donnell The Truth In Me.

The Truth In Me sees O’Donnell step out from playing his signature keyboard lines in the iconic and legendary group The Cure, to composing and recording his first solo release entirely on a Moog Voyager.  The MiniMoog Voyager has a large cult of fanatic devotees and has been used to make many of the more fascinating sounds and records released since the instrument’s introduction in the early seventies.  Primarily recognized as a machine used to make “space-age” type sounds, Roger’s work has brought a unique and intriguing warmth to the instrument.  A work of true passion and actual craftsmanship, The Truth In Me is a surprisingly fresh and ultimately groundbreaking piece of work. Kevin Wortis explains, “Roger's record is just a perfect piece of music. It’s perfect exactly the way it is. It makes me do a double take every time I hear it. I catch myself saying "what's that beautiful sound" even though I've now played it 100 times. It’s so carefully crafted, it’s thoughtful and effortless at the same time. I'm just very proud to be involved with Roger and honored to be trusted with his work.”  Street date is set for October 24th, 2006 with a national tour to follow.  Roger O’Donnell has seen a storied career already having been the long time keyboard player of the Cure and co-authoring many of that band’s biggest hits.

The first of many releases to come, expect the unexpected from Great Society.

    Congratulations again Roger!

"I was reading this (http://www.mp3.com/stories/3063.html%0D%0D%CA) interview with the band "She Wants Revenge" ( seems to be pretty known in the U.S., but here in Belgium, i think almost nobody heard of 'em, i just happened to see one of their videoclips last night, which b.t.w. was pretty ironically, minding the "copy/paste" controversy around the band, programmed just before an Interpol video ), when reading this:

*Chris: I hear a bit of Simon Gallup's bass lines and Bernard Sumner's riffs, and the vocals call to mind the Psychedelic Furs...

*Justin Warfield: Right. I mean, you nailed three serious influences on both of us. [...] New Order and the Cure and the Smiths and the
Psychedelic Furs were all really important bands, and the crossover between what the new wave and the hip-hop scenes were doing with punk rockers, [along with] the influx of disco from Studio 54 and what was happening in New York at that time, [as well as] collaborations like when Blondie did "Rapture" and when the Rolling Stones did ["Miss You"]...is also an influence on what we do. [...] Like, we learned our ideas about songwriting as we were kids, hearing albums like /Purple Rain/ or Disintegration or /The Queen is Dead/, you know, and all of the New Order songs and all of that
    stuff. [...] "

A bit further, when asked if they would be prepared for the potential succes of the album, one of 'em answers that they hope [...blablabla...] if they make honest music [...blablabla...] "perhaps there would be others that would feel the same way. And we knew that we would have people that would identify [with] it. The only variable was the number of people, but we didn't really care because as long as we had a core audience of people, kids perhaps now could hear this album and it could be their /Purple Rain/ or it could be their /Disintegration/ or their /Queen is Dead/. That was the goal, whether it was 10 kids or 10,000 kids."

When looking up some reviews of their first album, The Cure pops up as an "influence"/"copy/pasted item" pretty often."

    (Thanks Laurent)

  • Here are the lyrics (possibly a few mistakes) for the three unreleased songs from 'The Cure' sessions:

  • A BOY I NEVER KNEW

To have his arms around me, to sense his perfect trust
    I’d give everything I have…everything…

I’d love to see him sleep, I’d love to know his dreams.
To hold his hand in mine and listen to him breathe.
To watch him as he wakes, look into his eyes
I’d give all I ever had for a moment of his life.

He’s my heart and my soul.
He’s my blood and my bones.
He’s my prayers and my hopes
    My wishes and dreams
Seems so long ago, so long ago…

I’d love to hear him laugh, I’d love to catch him smile.
To join him so close, to feel him by my side.
To have his arms around me, sense his perfect trust
I’d give everything I have for a moment of his love.

He’s my heart and my soul.
He’s my blood and my bones.
He’s my prayers and my hopes
    My wishes and dreams
    Seems so long ago,…

He’s my heart and my soul.
He’s my blood and my bones.
    He’s my wishes and dreams
    My prayers and my hopes

    A boy I never knew
And the man I’ll never know.
    I’ll never know…

To watch him as he wakes, look into his eyes
    I’d give all I ever had…

Note - This is what Robert had to say about this song in an interview with Italian magazine Rockstar (Aug. 2004):

"I wrote many sad songs for this album and Ross is sorry I did not include them. He believes they're the best of them all. One is the saddest I've ever written. It's called "The boy I never knew". I played it to everyone who came to the studio, and everyone broke in to tears. Too much for me. I didn't feel like releasing it now, but someday I will."

    PLEASE COME HOME

I look out the window watching the world go round.
I wonder where you are now. I wish you were here now.
Waiting at the window I watch the rain come down.
Wondering what to do now. Wishing you were here now.

    I don’t understand why you couldn’t stay.
I don’t understand why you went away.
    I don’t understand why you wouldn’t say.
I only know I need you now to…

    Please, come back to me.
    Please, come home.
    Please, come back to me.
    Don’t leave me here alone.
Knocked down here on my own…

I watch out the window whispering hopeless words.
I won’t let you go now. I want you here now.
Watching out the window, whisper a helpless world.
Pulling me back now.  Wanting you here now.

    I don’t understand why you couldn’t stay.
I don’t understand why you went away.
    I don’t understand why you wouldn’t say.
I only know I need you now to…

    Please, come back to me.
    Please, come home.
    Please, come back to me.
    Don’t leave me here alone.
Don’t leave me on my own.
    Don’t leave me here alone.
Knocked down here on my own…

Still I wait at the window watching the world go round.
I wonder where you are now.
    Please, come home…

    STRUM

It will be so perfect, I said. Too beautiful for words.
It will be…so perfect I said.

My words are stupid, worthless, merely so much noise
I want to cover up the wall
Good things really never run the first time through
    Adapted for our latest ploy
    A pantomime of feeling good…good…good!
And waving as the smile just sits
But really I have never cared less in my life
    To ever smile again.

I sit before the mirror white and draw my red eyes black.
My head is full of everyone you ever knew
    Reflected, tired and cracked.

My act is empty, hopeless only so much luck
A show to cover up the stage
All this strewn to satisfy another you in
    Acting out this tired charade.
    A pantomime of feeling good…good…good…good…gooooood!
Drowning as the smile drips down.
But really I have never cared less in my life
    Whatever turns around.

I sit before the mirror cold and paint my black mouth red.
Your head is full of everyone I ever knew
    Reflected, old and dead.

It will still be perfect, you said. Too beautiful for words.
    It will still…be perfect…

And please understand that these songs ARE NOT from the new album or single. The band recorded 20 tracks for the 2004 'The Cure' album - 15 found their way to various versions of the album, 2 were used for b-sides and these are the remaining 3 that didn't make it out at the time. And that doesn't even get into all of the instrumental demos that have never been officially released. So if the rumored deluxe edition of 'The Cure' ever comes out, they have more than enough to fill an extras disc.

  • And all that could have been...in so many different ways....

  • "Wanted to give you some info on the 3 unreleased tracks from the cure's 2004 album. these were not featured on any version of the album or b-side
    releases:

A Boy I Never Knew - AMAZING! Possibly the most honest and mature song Robert has ever written. Lonely Piano, Acoustic Guitar, Light Drums and Sparse String Section. Reminds me of a children's lullaby (which makes sense since he supposedly wrote it for the son he never had) Could be compared to "going nowhere" in tone, but the simple, yet catchy tune reminds me of something from Kiss Me. Overall the track could have easily fit on Disintegration.

Strum - Another song that could have lived on Disintegration (as a b-side probably) although sonicly the track has more in common with Wish-era. The lyrics are very clever and literate in a way that Robert hasn't exhibited since The Top.

Please Come Home - Another song that could have easily lived on the second side of Disintegration. The track seems a little unfinished until the
lead-in to the chorus. Then it really takes off. Jason's tribal drumming, mixed with the monolith keyboards competing with Robert's vocals really
brings me back to 1989. Sends chills and makes you realize the slow undistinguished build-up only sells the song more.

And there you go. Why these tracks never made it onto the album, I have no idea. These, plus the songs available on the vinyl release (TGB, Going
Nowhere, This Morning), easily put the 2004 album up there with Disintegration in my opinion. My favorite band of all time has not lost one ounce of talent or focus over the last 15 years- they've just made a few bad choices in terms of song selections for their albums. Maybe they'll follow their hearts on the next one...."

M.C.: "If you look back we had at one point six signature guitars like a Jerry Horton, a Tommy Lee model and stuff - they're still our friends and still play our guitars.  We might do some more next year.  We're talking with the guys in Avenged Sevenfold and Jeff Loomis from Nevermore.  As guitar playing seems to be getting back to technique and proficient playing it seems like it might have more relevance for us to do it now.

The Robert Smith thing is different.  We're huge Cure fans.  To have Robert - who's never endorsed anything - wanting to design a guitar with us was just, cool!  To see a band that I grew up with and respect, and to design a guitar with him, and then see him play their entire catalogue with it was a really cool thing.

We're also working with Porl Thompson who's back in the Cure.  He played with them during their nineties heyday but left the band to go and play
with Page and Plant.  But he's a brilliant guitar player and he's using a Corsair.  We're working with him on a signature model.  He's got a UK street tattoo artist, Kev Grey, designing a graphic - it'll be a pretty wild looking Corsair".

    ....The Cure

While on the subject of noteworthy dudes who wear makeup, let's not overlook Cure frontman Robert Smith, a man who seemingly smears his
lipstick on in the dark. His British band is famous for its trend-setting mope rock, although "Friday I'm in Love" is as upbeat a ditty as you'll ever hear....http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/entertainment/1154609777270540.xml&coll=2"
