Iberian Wolf

As recently as the 1920s, wolves could be found throughout most of Portugal. Today there are probably only 200 wolves in the northern part of the country.

Threats to their survival are many - habitat loss, persecution and diseases. If we do nothing the Iberian wolf in Portugal will become extinct!

There is little doubt that the fortunes of the wolf, probably more than any other animal, have suffered from a bad press and from its starring role as the villain of many a fairy tale.

But all is not lost. Many studies of the wolf and its behaviour are slowly leading to a greater understanding, tolerance and respect for this animal.

Wolves are family animals. They appear to enjoy one another's company, greet each other with great enthusiasm, and take turns in looking after the pups. Their hunting abilities and strategies have been admired and copied by man, their resilience and their determination to protect territory and family have proved a source of inspiration.

HOPE FOR THE FUTURE

In the late 1980s there were two events that made the future of the Iberian wolf in Portugal look brighter. The species was granted full legal protection and a truly unique facility was established, the Iberian Wolf Recovery Center

AIMS OF THE IWRC (IBERIAN WOLF RECOVERY CENTER)

Today the IWRC covers 17 hectares of a beatiful, quiet valley, close to Lisbon. The IWRC has a dedicated team of full-time staff and volunteers who provide expert care for all the rescued wolves, ensuring that every effort is made to meet individual needs.
