RAID as an acronym.  It is pronounced raid.  There is 1 definition.

Its purpose is to provide computer data back-up.

Hardware-based RAID solutions combine multiple hard drives in one hardware box, which is called an array.

There are two types of RAID architecture to consider:  host-based and SCSI-to-SCSI-based (SCSI stands for Small Computer System Interface, a technology that is commonly used to connect computers to peripherals, networks, and each other).  Both methods are equally reliable for back-up protection.

In general, SCSI-to-SCSI products are more flexible and scalable, while host-based systems are a bit faster.
