ATHENS 2004
DALARAS CONCERT
.................back
to top![]()
This free concert for 80,000 as
part of the publicity for the Athens 2004 olympic bid,
called for a unique solution. The audience area was a large T
shape in front of the building requiring 180 degree
sitelines, ground support was out of the
question. Consequently a system to fly both
lights and PA was required. Having used cranes in Oman 's
national day celebrations to fly the lighting system a
similar approach was adopted for this project.
The Lighting rig and the main PA
were suspended from four 25 ton cranes on 8m high 3-way
bridles This completely dispensed with the
classic PA wing and also greatly enhanced the sitelines of
the public to the architecture of the building which was
illuminated with Clay Paky fixtures. The Lighting System comprised
approximately 300 pars, 6 molefays and 20 scans and was
controlled via Jandshog and Celo consoles.

This event was held in Paris at the Parc des Princes in the middle of the world cup. This television production for Globo TV was part of there ongoing series of "500 Annos Brazil", a celebration of Brazil's 500th Anniversary. The availabilty of the venue meant there was only two days to set up a stadium size system with a 20m wide stage and over 200 moving lights.

Danny Nolan, the lighting designer, opted to use WYSIWYG extensively to program the system as there was no rehearsal time. CAD designs modelled the stage (see above) and two full Wysiwyg systems were used in conjunction with two full Wholehog II's to program the show. Many thanks to Donny, Fredo and all at Regie Lumiere and X+Y for your help

CAD designs provided lighting
consultancy for the Opening and Closing ceremonies for the
BBC. This comprised providing drawings,
plans, scripts and plots for the shows which used over 2000
Pars, 100 cyberlights and 96 Studio colors, 12 Supertroupers
and 6 7k Xenons.
The Opening Ceremony featured a
Human Graphic panel comprising over 5000 volunteers with 16
colours of flipcard that. This Human Graphic provided a
backdrop of over 200 images to accompany the performances on
stage and field. The closing ceremony included an
international concert with performances by many local
artists as well as Donna Lewis and the Corrs.
The opening ceremony included two
cultural diplays with props including 20m long inflatable
dragons and a Bebola - a rotating sphere which opened like a
flower. SES provided the lighting equipment
for this show with backup up from High End
Systems Many thanks to all the crew at SES
who worked so very hard to make this show possible. Some of
them are pictured below.

OPENING
OF THE WORLD CUP
STADIUM...back
to top![]()
Recently completed project in Paris
for Skertzo on behalf of Skylight-the opening ceremony for
the new world cup stadium. CAD designs modeled the stadium
in Wysiwyg and programmed the light show to timecode.
24 STX searchlights achieved
perfection in performance with over 200 cues triggered
within the 25 minute spectacle including the likes of the
192 step stopwatch chase (anyone for timing down to 25/ths
of a second!!) not to mention another 70 different
effects. Highlights of the show are in the
QT window opposite.
70 preset palette focuses built in
Wysiwyg enabled the production of immaculate focus for the
mile high searchlight beams. Skertzo used 20 PIGI projectors
to project onto an elliptical screen which midway through
the spectacle transformed into a 3 dimensional mountain
range(see above). Elastonautes suspended on 40m high bungees
provided the human element of the show with graceful aerial
ballets and carefully choreographed manouevers. A QTVR movie
is available for download opposite. Many thanks to Skertzo,Skylight,
Glynn and Mike at AC lighting for all their help and
encouragment with this project.
