A Brief History of..


 CAD Designs is a specialist company run by Andrew Doig devoted to the pursuit of excellence in lighting and computer design.

Andrew Doig has been in the lighting business since 1980 and his roots are from Zenith Lighting,a company run by Paul Turner and Pam Lord.

An early baptism with moving lights began with Telescan in 1983 and Vari*lite. In 1984 he acquired his first Mac computer and started to work on CAD.

His experience grew from events such as Live Aid and and tours from clients as varied as Jesus Christ Superstar, The Cure, Chris de Burgh and Kid Creole and the Coconuts.

 


 

 

His first project as lighting designer was Chris de Burgh and he continued to design shows for Chris for over 10 years. This period included over 1000 shows and more than 30 different designs in markets including Europe, South Africa,Japan, America, Russia the Middle East and Australia.

Designs with Chris enabled Andrew to develop his skills in CAD and led to further research with video graphics, high intensity slide projection and automated searchlights.

Stone Roses

Since then he has continued to design and operate lighting systems for a variety of live performers with artists as varied as the Stone Roses, Jose Carreras,Jeff Beck,Morcheeba, Saga, Toto, George Dalaras and Andrea Bocelli.

His design ethics have always focused on quality rather than quantity and his lighting designs are based on practicality from experience as well as high-tech creativity.

 


 

His interest in lighting design led him to other diverse fields working on a a variety of special projects such as the National day of Oman. One of the most notable of these was the Prince of Wales Symphony for the Spire Concert at Salisbury Cathedral featuring a host of stars including Placido Domingo, and Phill Collins.

This milestone event won a BAFTA award and included 10 STX searchlights to illuminate the 400' tall spire. Press coverage included a half page photo on the front page of the Times newspaper and the event was an outstanding success.

Canary Wharf

Undeterred by the challenge of Salisbury Cathedral's height an even more daunting project ensued for the 1992 New year celebrations at the tallest Sky scraper in Europe Canary Wharf.

Andrew's 1997 projects included "an Evening in Tuscany" Video for Andrea Bocelli in Pisa and Toto's 1997 tour of South Africa including a new video for the single Africa.
