Brief History

AccelRat software was designed and implemented by Paul Matthews to provide a consistent and theoretically sound method of rating the strengths of go players on a numerical scale, based on tournament results.

The American Go Association (AGA) ratings systems has used AccelRat software since 1989. The software has also been used for ratings systems in Canada and Europe, and for local club ratings. Algorithms copied from AccelRat software are used on Internet go servers.

The AccelRat pairing algorithm takes advantage of being able to handle ratings information properly, including making dynamic updates. The pairing algorithm was first used for tournament simulations used to test the AGA ratings system, and since then, has been used in actual tournaments and refined in response to feedback from players and tournament directors.
