INSTRUCTIONS:
follow these easy steps!
1
Click on the file you want.
2
Some web browsers ask if you want to view the document. Choose 'cancel'.
3
Click on 'save'.
4
The file will now be copied to your computer. Note the file name and where
it is going. When it has finished, you can disconnect.
5
"But where is it?" All articles are named "art_....doc" (for example,
'art_rea.doc'). All papers have an inidividual name. To find the file chose
'file open'. The file should be in the list. Check the directory name and
then open the file in your word processor.
6
"I still can't find it!" Using a File Manager, Windows Explorer
(or similar), search for the file. Search for "art*.doc" for an article
or the full file name for a paper.
PROBLEM-SOLVING
[Return to instructions]
Problem
1: I can't download it. Nothing happens when I click on the
file name.
Possible
reasons and solutions:
a)
Your web browser is not installed correctly. Reinstall it.
b)
There is possibly an error in the web page. Contact
Andrew Littlejohn.
Problem
2: I've downloaded the article but I can't open it.
Possible
reasons and solutions:
a)
You are trying to open the document in a word processor other than Word
for Windows. Install a conversion filter for your word processor
or ask a friend who was Word for Windows (version 6 or later).
b)
You are trying to open it on a Macintosh computer. Install
a filter for Word for Windows version 6.
c)
You are trying to run 'school.exe' (a compressed article) on a Macintosh.
This won't work on a Macintosh.
d)
The document isn't complete. Downloading was interrupted.
Try again!
Problem
3: It takes AGES for the file to download.
Possible
reasons and solutions:
a)
There is a lot of internet traffic. Try again another time -
particularly when the United States of America is asleep. (In Europe,
the best time is in the morning, before noon).
b)
You have a poor telephone line. There may be a lot of "noise" on
the line and you modem has connected at a low speed. Disconnect and
try again.
c)
You are using an old, slow modem. Be patient! (A modem
running at 14.4 and above should be fine with most of the files and the
pages).
