Recognition of "Yellow Cab Company": If you ever need a cab, please try: (413) 739-9999, first! WHY?
Since 1981, the company owner has paid out of his pocket every New Years Eve, enabling 200+ free rides, lessening the risks of drunken drivers. (New Years 1998, I read about 2 drivers heading in the wrong direction causing fatal accidents on Rts 84 & 95 in Connecticut). What a wonderful public service he gives us each year! I'm hopeful people remember that & give him a little "thank you", - for that important consideration of us...
FYI: The Indian Motorcycle was made in Springfield Mass from 1901-1953, and has remained a major collector's item ever since. There is a serious attempt underway to build a new line of Indian's (retaining the classic style) in Springfield again... - Stay tuned!
1. "Official" City of Springfield Mass - Web Site
2. Forest Park & Zoo:This 735 Acres of Land was donated to the
city, years ago. We
had a fine zoo, but greedy politicians destroyed animals &
cages, killed most of the
city funding (some were trying hard to build hotels & like on
donated land, instead
of providing something special to the residents). A society was
formed which fought for
years to bring back what the city once had. Wonderful things have
resulted from their
efforts - there are some things to miss from the original ZOO,
yet in other ways, it got
remade "much nicer" than ever! Anyone who is an animal
lover will be thrilled to see
the animal residents of the "Petting Zoo" & will
want to go return! Each year it is
bigger and better yet...

This park has Camp Seco
for Kids in the summer, Duck Ponds, Baseball, Picnic
Tables, Swimming Pools & More! No one will be able to shut
this park down, it has
become too much a draw to the city & too important to
residents!
"Aprox"
November 15 thru December is Springfield's; "Bright
Nights"
light displays (at Forest Park).
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
I won't attempt to
describe the experience of Bright Nignts, driving through it. It took
"many millions of dollars" to create. In the 1997
Season alone, 61,417 cars and
700 Buses toured the 52
day event. This is "a can't miss" Christmas Season site,
one of the biggest animated light displays - in our Nation!
Bright Nights "Hotline":
(413) 748-6190.
Rt 91, Forest Park Exit (on Sumner
Avenue)
Expect some
wait behind cars to get in - - but it is worth it!!!
3. Pioneer
Valley - Event Calendar & Hotline: Call 747-4990,

4. Springfield

the plans). A brand new
"Dr. Seuss" building will
be going there (Dr. Seuss was actually a Professor at
Springfield College...!). I will insert a Dr Suess web page link
- before too long, here!
5.
Eastern States Exposition: "The
Big E" is anually starts around September 12 and runs
thru the end of September. If you have never been there, that is
a "must go"! One of the
5 largest fairs in the Nation (for all of New England) - whether

have never seen it - do it once!

1800's Town. During the summer
Season, people in costume work with crafts, harvests, and more. I
will insert their web

is in the phone books!!!).
7.
Boston Mass - Haymarket Square: I ate at "Durgin's Park" when the entire area was only
"long abandoned shipping Wharfs"... This is
one of our favorite places to go for a day,
because there is so much to see & do! New England Seaquarium, Old North Church,
Freedom Trail, Old State House, Quincy Market, Fanueil Hall, Old Ironsides (USS
Constitution), Boston Tea Party Ship, Fenway Park & much more! We always
enjoy using MBTA: Mass Boston
Transit Authority.
Absolutely must
visit Old North Church - Once
!), great food, interesting shops,
various Science & Other Museums (Must visit that Incredible Seaquarium - at least
once, also!). I always park short of Boston & use the MBTA
system to get me to
Government Ctr. Everything is within
walking distance, including Anthony Martinelli's
(from the 50's TV Commerical's Family - "Wednesday is Prince
Spaghetti day") home & store!
Plan to not visit even
half of all there - on one full day trip!
Yet Another Boston site (I've not yet visited this one!) is the John F. Kennedy Library.
8. Cape Cod, Mass: Never been there? Plan it!

9. Springfield Armory: The entire site of STCC College was once
part of the Armory.
I believe it was President Nixon(?) who took a lot of the
"really impressive exhibits"
I saw years ago (some which had
been there 100 Years), but some has migrated to an Armory
in another State. I would
excitedly recommend what I saw, prior to the "confiscated" items...That
was an extremely
impressive site....
Told what remains is
still there is well worth
visiting (no idea
whether Gattling Guns and misc
other items I saw are yet
there...). Call: (413) 734-8551. Visit the Park & other Springfield
sites (see above), same day!!!
10. Higgins

Worcester (Barber Ave)! One of
the best Medieval Armor sites - in the world. Armor for dogs,

Holyoke Mass Mall
Stanford Town Center (Connecticut
MALL) - This is my favorite !!!!
The History of
Christmas in Massachusetts;
In 1637, Massachusetts banned the
Celebration of Christmas. In 1817,
Rev. Titus Strong conducted the 1st Christmas service in the new Springfield
Armory Chapel, which was a beginning, where others gradually joined in to
Celebrate the Holiday. Finally, in 1984, they stopped local merchants from
firing any employee who failed to work a full day on December 25. So in Mass
today, you are free to say "Merry Christmas", and to celebrate the
holiday!
There is a wonderful Christmas store on Rt 9, close to RT
91 (heading towards
Amherst). There is also a very nice Christmas store (on
the same road as the
Holyoke Mall) in Holyoke. If you are ever in those areas,
you would enjoy those
specialty shops, I'm sure!

Doc Bastarache's Big Band
Phone: (413) 568-2052
Don started this Big Band in 1979, incorporating arrangements from
Glenn Miller,
Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Woody Herman, Count Basie, Buddy Rich,
Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw and more. Some of the musician's he has used had played
with one or more of those bands, in fact.
Don has worked with
swing and jazz bands over the past 20 years. He is head of
Jazz Studies at Westfield
State College. He is a
United States Coordinator for the
International Association of Jazz Educators, and Chief Adjudicator for the
Massachusetts Chapter.
Don has been a good
friend of mine for many years, it is great to see a Big Band
survive for the next generation to enjoy (as well as the older)!
- When I have a
sound clip - I will add here!
- When I have the Band's Concert Schedule - I will add it here!
